Recommend a site in Loire region please

Hi All,

Starting to plan next year's trip already and looking for some recomendations please. We are thinking about spending approx 6 days in the Loire region on the way back north to ferry at Caen. We would like to visit some of the Chateaux in that area. Can anyone recommend a site please?

There will be two adults and one 14 year old. Not looking for any entertainment on site. Clean, well run, relatively quiet site would do.

Municipal site at Neung south west of Orleans is a well run smallish site on a river bacnk in easy reach of Chambourd.

There is a big site at Onzain near Blois which would give you Amboise but it's somewhat commercial with resident tent tout operators.

Both in Caravan Club Europe 1 book. I'd go for Neung.

We've stayed several times in the loire mainly overnight en route to Spain. But for longer stays, campsites I wouldf recommend are 1} La Citadelle, Loches. A short walk from this site and you're in the medieval town of Loches which is well worth a visit in it's own right. We also visted Chenonceaux from here. 2} Les Bois du Bardelet 3 miles southwest of Gien. Although a little outside the main 'Loire Chateau area' the site has a nice peaceful feel about it.
 
I thoroughly agree with the recommendation for Camping la Citadelle at Loches. The site is excellent, and Loches is wonderful. It's also well placed for visiting other places like Chenonceaux.

thanks to all who replied so promptly. Citadelle was one I had already considered. It is good to get the views of fellow caravanners who have actually been on site.

Hi

LA Loire is a long river but I would certainly endorse Bois de Bardelet. Others to consider seriously are de Chantepie, Le Chant d'Oiseau, L'Isle Vert, L'Etang de la Breche. All these are in the Saumur area.

Chantepie is close to Saumur and is set up high with a veiw over the Loire just below, we've found that the open setting gets a good breeze even on very hot days unlike being down in the river valley.

Saumur area is famed for its great sparkling wines (rivals champagne) and superb mushrooms that can be bought from caves along side the river valley road near to the campsite.

We don't really do old buildings, but found the Chateau in Saumur quite dissapointing as it was a near empty shell unlike old homes in the UK.

We've been back to Saumur and Chantepie as the famed French Riding School - The Cadre Noir is on Holdiday in August, you can visit but there are no riding dispays.

There's also a sister site to Chantepie called De L'etang which is just S of Angers at a town called Brissac Quince. Not the cheapest but very clean and you can walk to the local chateau along the river that passes thru the site. There is a small leisure park over the road but it was v. quiet in June.
 
hi rob give Lac du Maine near Angers a look huge pitches site is set in a large recreation park sailing,fishing and water sports the site itself is well kept with aswimming pool resturant etc.and a easy bus ride into the beautifull city of Angers with chateaux with a huge tapestry they take camping cheques happy hols peter

Very interested in this site, La Citadelle. Can you please give details of their website - can't find it. Looked on Alan Rodgers and can't find it there either- what am I doing wrong?
