Is this fixable, or cheaper getting a new set? Dull dark line appeared last night.

Yes it's probably fixable but very tricky as a DIY job as you'll need to take out the LCD panel. Been there, tried that and failed at the last minute.

My LG screen started having weird colours on it. Problem was the Led backlights had died in a few places. I managed to get them out and ordered replacements. About £60.

Took the LCD panel off again; replaced the Led backlights and then put the LCD panel back in place. Heard a crack and a split across the panel appeared. Now totally dead.

Got my money back on the Led backlights and bought a new TV.

Much will depend on its "age".
If that's into years and requiring to fund an engineer, the more so if its also involves a call out, that will quickly "Hoover" up money that IMO would be way better invested in buying a new set.
Economic repair of these things tends to be increasingly limited to the enthusiastic and knowledgeable DIYer, in this field it is not my territory.

Edit: I would have to try a "hard reboot"[leave unplugged overnight], and seeing if as affected with its other inputs, PC, set top box, DVD player etc; then start a market place deal scan for last year's models.

The problem is most people of a certain age expect a modern LED TV to work as long as a CRT set of 20+ years ago where in fact the life expectancy of a LED TV is more like 5 years!

Our second TV after we got married (and it is our Golden Wedding anniversary this year!) was a Philips 16 inch CRT analogue and it lasted about 18 years without a second's problem!

My advice - having recently been there - is to look see what John Lewis have on offer. We got a Samsung 32in smart TV for the bedroom at £199, and more recently changed the lounge TV for a LG 32in smart for £179. Both work supremely well albeit both are brain bending when it comes to the smart bit! On balance I think the LG picture is slightly sharper but its prog guide is in silly tiny text. On the other hand the Samsung guide is much easier to use but occasionally looses contact with the streaming prog that you are trying to watch. For both sets, if possible, use Ethernet connection (i.e. cable) rather than letting it find its way around on wi-fi!

JLP will usually give you a five year guarantee with any smart TV, as will Richer Sounds (even six years with them) if JLP cannot meet your needs.

Agreed. When I was forced to by a new TV I bought a Sony from John Lewis partly because they offered a 5 year warranty.

Having experience of family Samsung TVs I can't say I'm impressed by them for various reasons but specificaly the ability to set the screen colours/brightness/contrast to my liking.

That's because of the technology used, as ever it's a race for cheapness.
OLED may look better, but those prices make your eyes water.
I've yet to see an LED or OLED TV that can match the picture quality of my LG Plasma, still hanging on at 14 years old!.
The blacks are black and the colours are great. Sure it uses about a billion times more power but I don't care

+1 for Richer Sounds, you can buy online so don’t need to be near one of their stores (which aren’t always located that conveniently). You can get some better deals if you join their VIP Club. As has been mentioned, their guarantee is pretty good. Main downside is that you won’t necessarily be getting the latest cutting edge technology.

I think the statement that LCD TVs have a life expectancy of 5 years isn't necessarily true.

I have two 20" LCD monitors on my PC which are approaching 20 years old. I calibrate them regularly and they don't appear to drift, or at least not very much anyway.

I've got a 17" LCD TV that's even older and it's still fine.

Then again they don't make them like they used to. 😉

That could be a blessing 🤞
