Hi Plotter. How you doing?
All this fuss about a bit of hosepipe! I'm now well into injury time and have used hosepipes to fill my tanks and drunk whatever water comes out of the tap wherever I happen to be and I've never been ill because of it, and I'm not yet dead.
So is all the fuss really necessary?

Hello Emmerson,

Congratulations on dodging the odds.

Its very dangerous to base a recommendation based on one persons example. The advice about water carrying pipes has come from years of experience and from investigating situations where it has gone wrong.

Unless you know the composition of the hose you are using, you do not know what its toxicity level is. For example there used to be ( and it may still be the case) that some yellow hoses and fittings were coloured using cadmium which is highly toxic, as little as a glass full of water through one hose was enough to put a child in hospital.

Other chemicals used in non food grade pipes have a tendency to leech out into the water tainting it.
Its better to be safe than sorry, especially when you have been warned about a potential danger.

Only once have I used a servied pitch, but not as such used as a normal pitch.
Like Emmerson 38 years with a van and we drink water from out of the taps regardless of how the water is received by the site ( including wells and in one case a stream ). Never had any problems.
Daughter had a new static van 2 years ago water was tainted must have been the new plastic pipework they use in them, didn't drink so much when in that van. It also upsets the son in laws system he has to boil it first, and he drinks gallons of water.

The old Craven A cigarette advert said smoking will not damage your throat :woohoo:
Non food grade hoses contain a number of carcinogens as explained by the
Prof.
One of the most common and dangerous are phthalates.
Whilst you may not receive a large dose every time you use the hose
over a period of time, added to the ones you are breathing in anyway from the environment, you might be exposed to higher doses of them than are desirable for a normal life and, if you are of reproductive age, this might affect the outcome.

I guess an analogy might be cigarettes. One will not kill you but many, over the years , will certainly affect your quality of life.
