Oh, Ok, I was thinking about popping over to the main part tomorrow with the dogs. I might risk it anyway.

The Maun always did flood quick. I recall making rafts out of barrels and playing on the flooded meadows at Old Clipstone, now called Kings Clipstone since the snobs moved in ... hehheh!

I hope it's ok for October, I'm hoping to book in there so I can go and visit my old duchess and the rest of my family.

When I was a kid I used to go for picnics where the bridge is on the site, it used to be a ford then. We walked for miles along Major Shaw-Browns lanes. A spinney led from Clipstone, the village I lived in, leading to what we called "the backs". It eventually led to a few lanes which brought us to the Maun. In those days it was alive with Water Voles but sadly the Mink have probably killed them off. We followed the Maun then to where the site is now but in those days we saw nobody except Major Shaw-Brown or his family. Such happy days, full of nostalgia when the sun always seemed to shine. If only I could put the clock back.

LB, we passed through that area last week, and the signpost still said "old Clipstone". There was no memorial plaque there though!

You probably passed my mothers house then emmerson. Did you see the tall pit headstocks, the house I was brought up in is a few hundred yards from those.

The village of Old Clipstone was just called Clipstone until they sank the mineshaft and built a village, around the 1920s I believe. That was named New Clipstone so Clipstone then became Old Clipstone. Eventually the New was dropped, just becoming Clipstone. Not too many years ago the residents changed the name to Kings Clipstone, why I don't know. Probably due to the upmarket houses that were being built on some of Shaw-Browns land.

Hopefully then they have reverted back to the original name because the name Kings Clipstone was naff. I bet it's all to do with the few stones that constitute a ruin at Old Clipstone which was purported to be the hunting lodge of King John. Locally the ruin is know as King Johns Palace :O)

Hi Mark

We took the dogs to Sherwood Forest and parked in the carpark at the college. Those woods and walks are fabulous. The dogs loved it. The rain came lashing down a few times but other than that, we really enjoyed it.

Hmmmm, last I heard there was a big debate whether to keep them as part of our heritage. Obviously it will cost too much. From a personal point of view I couldn't see the point if the rest of the mine was out of bounds to future visitors. Thanks for the info Mark.

Lisa if you like walks go to Vicar Water at Clipstone. You can walk for miles with lovely scenery. Mark gave me this link once. My cousin is the Park Ranger at Vicar Water.

I can see where my brother lives from one of the pics but the house I was brought up in and where my mother now still lives is just out of shot. She lives on the main road on the corner of First Avenue.

I was a bit lost at fist when you said that you had parked at the college as I now it as the old liberty. It was a college they were teaching computer things there but now it as shut as not many people were uses it and it's up for sale.

Yes it is a fabulous to go for walk round Sherwood Forest but soon it going to be come a build sit as they have draw up plans for a new centre up there but there a lot of trouble going on a bout it as they what to shut the road throw the forest and they won't to build a very big tree out of steel so you can get a birds eye view.
