Sick Maverick ;O(

The trusty Maverick had to come home on the back of a wagon tonight. Engine revs all over the place and black smoke from exhaust. The revs go up and down as if the thottle position sensor is playing up but because of the smoke the Mayday man recons its the turbo. Not so sure myself. We have just got back from Wales and it pulled like a dream with no sign of a problem. Still with 104k on the clock it's about time something went wrong.

Anyone out there have any thoughts?

All donations gratefully received.

Revs all over the place and lots of smoke would sound a bit like the clutch on its way out. This is how the clutch failed on my Rover, although there wasn't a huge amount of smoke. Just an idea.

Cheers

Had the same symptoms on my Terrano Auto at 60K - I rekon it was the fuel pump - kept it drivable by frequent bleeding and it became an intermittant problem. Traded it as I didn't like it much anyway and before it cost me big bucks!

Could be a split in the one of the Turbo hoses Brian. These can give the symptons you describe as the thing sucks in too much air, then the split can act like a kind of valve getting things back to almost normal before opening up again when you put your foot down and the engine "sucks" more.

Maybe worth checking all the rubber hoses. If you find even the smallest hole poor running can result. Duck Tape is a get you home fix if you can get at the split.

As David said - it could be the fuel pump or a blocked fuel filter. Or even crap/water in the fuel. I remember this from College when the sub-normal amongst us thought it funny to pee in peoples petrol tanks. What Urine does to diesel engines I can only guess at.

A friend with a Mondeo TD Estate (He loves it poor man - says it is the best load lugger he ever had) had the cutting out problem, and missfiring with black smoke - in the end a complete fuel line strip down and tank out to clean and replace where nessessary found nothing wrong.

BUT - What they did find was a cardboard disc from a fuel additive bottle cap in the fuel tank. They reckon it had fallen into the tank when some injector cleaning fluid was added.

After that no problem at all.

Could also be air mass meter effecting the ECU and therefore sending horrible readings to the fuel pump, blown or under pressure turbo is more likely as is a faulty impellor ( I think that's what) it's called.

A independent diesel specialist is your best bet in any case.

Thanks all , the car went to Ford dealers this morning ,part of the same group that I work for, "yippee staff discount" The car would not start at all today which makes me think it's possibly an electrical fault.

Should find out tomorrow ... fingers crossed.

sorry to hear about the Maverick be unwell.

Best thing to do is wait till the nest meet when 10 of use men can have a look and see if we can fix it but we are a bit short on the tool side.

The reason for the breakdown is simple. you're not taking it off road enough (except for being in the garage), Brian. You gave it a taster at Easter, and now it wants more. Our Kia has been the same, mopeing around, being unrully, not cleaning up its parking space. But let it get a wheel on the grass or into a bit of mud and you can see it perk up! So when Maverick gets out of hospital, take him for a drive up and down dale, it's going to love you just that little bit more.

Ps take a voice recorder with you for the water splash, I want Binas laugh as a ring tone. ;o)

Or Brian, you could sell it and buy a real 4x4 ;-) and then you would not have people chasing you around the forum trying to get you to spend your hard earned to speak to a load of people who know less than your employers do!!!

Thanks Peter will have a look at the site. The car is in a Ford dealer so I'll leave it to them.Problem is the FDS system is old technology and a lot of dealers don't have them anymore,I worked at the biggest Ford site in Europe and had to take the car elsewhere if FDS was needed. Probably best to take the Maverick to a Nissan dealer ,I once had to phone Nissan to get info on reprogamming the key even though I worked for a Ford dealer. As for discounts ,I work for the same dealer group so get everything trade anyway ;O)

we do try! but mines being worked on at the moment so not getting dirty much. I have been given a set of seats out of a New RR sport with all the electronics in them - all electric movers, armrests heaters and dvd screens in the head rests. I am currently re-wiring the seats so that they can work in mine and getting a quote to have the existing rear seats re covered in black leather to match the new front seats.

I cut out the old seats next weekend to fit the new ones on the existing rails. Not bad for a computer geek!!

Steve

PS, hope you get it fixed soon!
