Skoda Yeti 2.0 TDI - can anyone recommend?

My company in it's wisdom has taken my beloved Mondeo Estate off our car list and all that I can see on there to tow my Abbey GTS Vogue is this Skoda - now, without wishing to be rude, the very fact that it is a Skoda is putting me off but if anyone can say nice things about it and tell me it's a great tow car then I could be persuaded.

Your thoughts please

Skod's track record for their current range must be the envy of other manufacturers. I'd forget the old jokes they should be consigned to the bin. A couple we know hada Yeti soon after they went on sale and they are over the moon with it. The off road capability is more than most drivers will need and even Clarkson on Top Gear rated the Yeti as a really good car. As regards its towing capabilty there was an article in either a recent CC or C&CC magazine.

I had an early Estelle which I sold at the asking price on the day it went on sale with 85k on the clock. Howver I did feel somewhat self conscious when a fuel stations!!
Take the Yeti for adrive and check out its towing spec using the makers figures and your van type.

thanks Clive - I've checked all the spec etc and it will do nicely for the Abbey - just wanted to see if anyone else had good things to say - will go and have a look at one tomorrow

The Yeti ticks a lot of boxes for me too, BUT check on the spare wheel situation. Does it come with full size spare,(I don't think it does) a can of gunk or a space-saver? Can you tow with a space-saver fitted? There's been quite a few posts on these issues in the recent past.

There are some makers that will not give a clear yes that you can tow with the space saver. I have a Volvo and their advice is that providing the car is within its rated loading (including van noseweight) and that the speed is kept within the rating of the tyre (50mph) the space saver can be used when towing, but the recommended distance is only 50 miles. This may be a limitation if touring say in France/Spain on Sundays/holidays when there are few garages, or tyre centres open.
As an aside Channel 5 reviiewd the Yeti and gave it a good report too, as did most car reviews.

Would have thought you'd have been talking about trading up to a Skoda.
Their reputation is enviable, coming out way above Ford and many others in the car satisfaction surveys I've seen.
From the actual reports on the Yeti I've read, if the weights are ok I'd say you're on to a winner.
My brother, whose had Land Rover, Merc, Audi etc. bought a Skoda Scout and is over the moon with it.
In fact he reckons it's better screwed together than his Audi TT, which he runs along side it.

LOL - no way would I be trading up - I love my mondeo - its the third one I've had - don't know the caravan is on the back with it and it has all the space I need for the dogs in the boot.

Been to look at the Yeti this morning - the boot and floor space isn't quite what I'm looking for so it's back to the drawing board. What you have all done though is made me think about the space saver - that had never crossed my mind before.

Hello Aileen,

Volkewagon took a major interest in the Skoda brand in 1991, Since then the marque has been transformed, and as others have said the old Skoda jokes are so far from the current truth, and Skoda is brand name to be reckoned with.
In essence Skoda's use Volkeswagon parts including engines and gear boxes. Their reliability is up amongst the best and resale values would shame some of the luxury marques.
There really should be no stigma attached to running a Skoda these days.

When My trusty Saab finally has to go, Skoda will definately be on my list of alternative makes to consider.

I do need to make one point concerning your last post, I am always very sceptical about drivers who claim they can't tell they have a caravan on the back of a towcar. Either they are telling lies, or I am concerned that do not have enough feel or understanding of the dynamaics of an outfit and thus I have to question if they are they safe to drive.

The maximum braked towing weight of all 2.0TDI's except the non-4x4 is 2000kg.

I quite agree with you about the "don't know the caravan is on the back" brigade. I have towed with what must be over 200 cars in recent years, and there's only one vehicle that I could have used that line, and that was a Range Rover TDV8. It's performance and stability were almost unbelievable, BUT I did not drive it solo, so don't know what it was like without the caravan in tow.With EVERY other vehicle, and I mean every other vehicle, the caravan made its presence known at some stage during testing.
For what it's woth to the OP, Skoda would certainly be on my list of manufacturers should I be thinking of changing vehicles.
