We're new to caravaning and the outdoors so bought a Senator and a Discovery to tow it (just as well cos we got stuck in the sand at Woolacombe with it with the tide coming in). Its getting very smelly .. what might be the problem.

Yes, I was quite surprised, did'nt know about tides, just thought the beach was a super spot to park up and piched a bit of firmer sand. Were you one of the surfers waving at us?

No, I was the one giving advice to the lifeboat men. Didn't have a clue about towing, did they? Wouldn't want to put my life in their hands. They seemed pleased with my advice.

the carpets got a bit wet but the upholstery was OK thank goodness, we rushed off and bought a dehumidifier whih seemed to dry things out ok. The lifeguard suggested to us that it maybe was'nt a good idea to park on the sand anyway cos there's some old magnetic mines around that might explode. So we heeded his advice and found a field.

You don't say, Jimmie, what sort of smell it is. Is it mouldy, in which case a thorough dry followed by anti-mould treatment may work but if it's a nauseating smell, it could be the adhesive used in the manufacture of chipboard or plywood. Some may have dissolved in the water and reacted, resulting in a sharp smell which is specific to the type of adhesive used. In that case, prolonged use of an air freshner is about all you can do to alleviate the problem. I only hope for your sake that moisture was not so serious that delamination of the floor has occurred. Either way, I would stay out of the caravan for a couple of weeks and give it a good airing, otherwise the smell could adversely affect your health.

That's not very nice taking the mickey like that. I did get wet but we've dried out now. Its OK for you experienced people but I was brought up in a city and don't know much about the outdoors but at least I've tried.. and anybody can make mistakes .. have'nt you? Big thing is to learn from them.

The smell is more of a sulphurous type of smell, like what you get near a septic tank.

Have you thought of getting a boat. They are like caravans inside, and you can tow them on a trailer like a caravan. The big advantage is that if you park it somewhere the tide is likely to come in, it won't get wet inside

No fear, I've had enough of floating in the sea. We were actually sleeping after a lunchtine BBQ on the beach with a few glasses of chilled wine when we were woken by a surfer tapping on the window to say we were floating off. Even in that short space of time I was seasick so I do'nt think the sea's for me. Do they do amphibious caravans nowadays like Queen Victoria used to have when she went skinny dipping with John Brown, something like that might be nice?

Sorry to read about your sea sickness Jimmie, may have been the BBQ and wine, all ways best to avoid alcohol and a big meal before going afloat, you can also get a wrist band that helps for next time you Launch. I would advise you vist an army surplus store they some times have the odd amphibious trucks for sale you could then get rid of the chasie, repair the floor and fit the the caravan to the lorry floor. This will mean you can then have the best of both worlds, dont forget the wrist band, you dont want to be sick in the van, the smell is hard to shift.

Jimmie, to go back to this foul smell in your caravan, had you intended to go fishing by any chance? If so, you must be very careful with rods, lines and bait. You must never let bait come into contact with interior fabrics. If that is the problem, you may have to purchase a specialist odour removal spray that you work into the fabric (or indeed carpets or headliner), and then thoroughly wash out with warm water after at least 40 minutes.

The important thing is then to let it dry properly, 24 to 48 hours, dependent upon ventilation, temperature, and, of course, humidity levels. If there is still a malodourous element, then repeat the process until eliminated.

There could be other obvious things such as misplaced items of food, or, I am afraid to say, personal hygene. I do hope that this helps.

If he's got either of those trapped in one of the cupboards, it would indeed make a smell! I'm not sure it's the sort of smell he's describing though
