Im interested in the results of fitting a solar panel onto a caravan roof. We have used a panel for a couple of years and have to admit it is a fantastic piece of equipment, however we have just bought a new caravan and are a bit nervous about damaging our "precious new van" thanks in advance.

I have several friends who have solar panels fitted to the roofs of their vans especially the ones that have to leave them away from home. I had the same concerns you did about about drilling holes into the roof of a brand new van which must invalidate the water ingress warranty.

I chose therefore to have my solar panel on a stand although I was offered the option of having rubber suckers fitted so that I could put it on the roof (need step ladder !) when I arrived on site.

Can thoroughly recommend 'Detroit Solar' who attend several rallies/meets during each year and will fit roof mounted panels on site.

I have used two 40 watt panels for several years now, and I (carefully) lift them through the Hekki rooflight when I get to site and run the cables down the side of the van to a socket in the battery box.

Further to the above....is it ok to use the solar panels whilst the caravan is 'laid up' for 4 or 5 weeks and the battery is being used to run the alrm system, or must the battery not be used whilst charging?

Eric we do it with no problems, we leave one of our panels open on the front seats with the roof blind open and it keeps the battery topped up with the alarm on.
