Hi Lawrence

I'm afraid I'm not coming on to offer much help here I'm afraid.

We had hoped to carry on south after visiting Rome last Summer but did not get much response regarding site recommendations when I posted on here and other 'van websites last year. There are some listed in "Alan Rogers Italy" and the CC "Caravan Europe" guides but it is good to personal recommendation. I was warned that the roads get poorer for towing south of Rome and that our large 'van (7.2 metres) could be a problem.

I will watch this post with interest as we are thinking of trying that area ourselves in Summer 2008.

Best wishes

Tim

Hi, We spent a week in Sorrento in 2005 as part of a month long tour around Italy. We just took pot luck and picked a site just outside the town from the CC guide. I don't recall the name so not much help.We weren't too bothered about the site itself as it was just a base to explore a fantastic area. A lot of the sites down there seem to have a lot of statics and are very busy but we had no problems getting a pitch in August. We would definitely visit again. A day trip to Capri is well worth it.

Hi Tim

We have visited Sorrento years ago on a 'package holiday' but were not caravanners then so didn't take note of the sites. There are a few mentioned in the various guides in the Amalfi peninsula, so we will find something. We are going, so I will let you know next year what we found!!

We have stopped at a site in Vico E'quense am away for a week at the moment but could let you have details when I return home a week next Monday.

With regards to roads below Rome we found it good as far as the heel of Italy when we went from Arbarabello in Trulli country up to Vico Equense with our Amara 520 2 years ago. From here the owner of the site will take you up to the Railway station to catch the train into Sorrento where you can explore the town and also catch the ferry to Capri for the day. This is well worth going on. Driving and parking in Sorrento is not too bad either. Pompeii is very close to this site too and Naples if you wish to visit them. If you are over 60 take your passport to to Pompeii with you as you get in free all you have to pay for is the guide if you need one.

On your way down from Rome you can easily call into Montecasino and stop a night at the site there and visit the Monastry and war cemetary. As you go down the main road you can see the Monastry for miles and it is well worth a visit.

Hope this helps Dianne

Hi Lawrence i have visited sorrento several times but not in the van. The road down from Naples is quiet bad just driving a car. There is a caravan/camp site but it doesnt look up to much, it is at the far end of the town heading towards the Marina Grande. There are good B&Bs in the town and the area on the whole in my opinion is wonderful. if you want more info you can email me

Thanks Yvonne. We have been to Sorrento before on a 'normal' holiday a few years ago and want to return with the van. I wasn't driving then but I remember the roads where not the best. Still hoping to go with the van in June.

Thanks Dianne. We have been to Sorrento before, but not with the van. If you could let me have the details of the site you stayed on that would be helpful. Thanks for the info re MonteCasion - I didn'd realise that was in the area.
