My car is fitted with a space saver spare wheel,(Peugeor 308 SW) not a full size spare. I have been wondering what are the implications of fitting the spare and towing with it fitted. Does one fit it to the front or rear wheel, even if it means swaping a full size wheel, or just replace the flat tyre with the space saver spare.

Some car manufacturers do not permit towing with a space saver wheel. If this is the case, there should be a note to that effect in the owner's handbook. Otherwise, towing is permitted with care and at reduced speed (usually 50mph max.) because, after all, the space saver must be capable of coping with the GVW of the car and the static load when towing a caravan cannot be any higher.

Nissan on the X Trail have a full size emergency not to be used fot towing (it says in the handbook) spare wheel

I contacted them about it and after 3 emails they replied by phone as I was hitching the van up to leave and they said that it was OK to tow with it to the nearest service station but they didn't put it in writing

There was enough room in the boot for a proper spare as the temp was full size and the logic of it defies me other than to save a few quid on the spec)

I got a wheel and tyre from Easy Jap Parts in Birmingham ex Xtrail Columbia) snd so 3 years later have not YET needed it!!
