Hi Chris,

The Kia Sportage and the Hyundai Tucson are basically the same car in a different dress. Hyundai and Kia are sister companies and these cars share a common platform, so like for like they should perform the same. Neither of these vehicles are true off roaders in the full sense of the word but their extra grip can come in handy when the going gets slippery and rough. I recall reading a comparison between these vehicles in which they both performed well and which one to choose came down to which one you prefer the look of and gives the best deal. The 4x4 vehicles will probaly be a more stable tow car with superior traction than the front wheel drive Vectra, but you will pay for it at the pumps.

Regards

Steve

Hi Chris,

You could try http://www.whattowcar.com which will allow you to compare the vehicles, and your present car, and see how they match up to your van. If you're lucky they may have a report on them as well.

I get approx 35 mpg with my Sportage, if I remember correctly the noseweight on the towball is limited to 75kgs.

I concur with Stephens comments - they are basically the same car under the skin. although you will get a 5 year warranty with the Hyundai.

not had one single problem with my Sportage (touches wood!), stability is fine - perhaps a little bodyroll round corners. and indicators are on "wrong" side if that puts you off. has coped with everything I've needed it too, so far.

Hi

I have a one year old 138 bhp diesel Sportage and I think its an excellent tug. It is well screwed together with no work required on its first service.Stability is good, and it pulls well in 6th gear even accelerating up moderate hills. I am happy with the mpg and have managed to get home from France a distance of 340 miles on one tank of diesel. This was in to a head wind and the tank holding less than 13 gal. The short overhang and stiffish suspension seem just right for towing.

Hi Chris.

I looked at both the Sportage and Tuscon before settling on a new Sportage CRDi XS last month. Towed to Devon with it a fortnight ago without any problem. In fact, I prefer it as a towcar to my previous Skoda Octavia TDi.

At the time of buying, the Tuscon had less room in the boot but more legroom in the back, and didn't come with ESP (stability program).

Got a very good deal (less than What Car Target Price) at Sandicliffe in Nottingham.

hi brave-fart

do you think the fuel consumption would be the same for the tuscon as i can't seem to find a sportage xs at the right price. Is the 75kgs noseweight a problem as my van has a noseweight of 100kgs.What weight van do you tow.

hi sandy

I'm going to france for the first time this year not really happy with the vectra as a stable match.Do the sportage/tuscon have the same engine if so the consumption should be the same. Some reviews of the tuscon say it is heavy on fuel. Can't find a sportage xs at the right price, looking at a 06 tuscon this weekend.

see here for the Tech Spec:

definately max 75kgs towball weight, no idea about the Tuscon. we tow an Eriba (small) caravan so have no problems with the Sportage.

it is worth pushing for discounts and/or extras on any Kia or Hyundai, just tell them you are looking at a Honda CRV or Nissan XTrail! Mark (",)

Chris,

ESP is the stability program that is being fitted to cars nowadays. It provides me with extra piece of mind when towing.

At the moment, I pull a Bailey Ranger 470/4 behind the Sportage but will be changing it to a slightly heavier Pageant Bretagne next year.
