Sterling Europa 650

Hi can anybody help, I visited the manchester caravan show yesterday and loved the Sterling Europa 650. A six berth twin axle van.

My tow car is a Honda crv with a tow limit of 1500kg weight of 1660.

The sterlings weight is 1480kg and allow another 200kg for loading.

I was assured by the salesman that my car was more than adequate for this van but i am really unsure, the weights seem to close. once loaded with battery gas bottles clothes etc will I be Legal.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

John

Hi John

Take the MTPLM caravan DIV by cars unladen weight X by 100 + %.

So 1480kg Div by 1500 cars weight x 100 = 98%

The recomended is 85%. I would check he 1480kg ofthe caravan seems a bit light to me for MTPLM sounds more like the MRO weight from the factory to me.

Hope the above helps you.

all the best Steve

hi to confirm exact details, tow car honda crv

kerb weight 1637kg

tow capacity 1500kg

caravan sterling europa 650

mass in running order 1481kg

max technical permissable laden mass 1755kg

at the trade stand the sales man got out his lap top and went on to a web site and stated my car was a good match, stating it could tow well in excess of its 1500kg tow capacity, This convinced us enough to put a deposit down but im now worried if i go ahead with the purchase either 1.the car will struggle. 2 it will be an illegal match and 3. is it safe for my family.

I am a confident driver with plenty of towing experience but the weight figures have got me concerned along with the fact that i am taking the word of a caravan companies advisor.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated especially if you can help quosh my fears

thanks

john

John , get your money back, there is no way you can tow this van legally. How can a car tow "well in excess" of it's maximum towing capacity?

I don't think you will have any trouble getting your deposit back after being given such bad information.

Hi

Thanks Brian for your comments, I am going to the dealers on Saturday I need to know why they have given such advice and will post the details.

To change the angle of the topic. we do really like the van so we are now thinking of putting off the purchase until we have a suitable car to tow it.

My next question, Can anyone recommend any car suitable for towing the caravan with a mass weight of 1755kgs.

Thanks

John

A flipping great big 'un.

Seriously, you are looking at the larger 4x4 type of vehicle. Something with a weight of 2000 kg such as LR Defender, Range Rover, Landcruiser etc etc

No problem John good luck at the dealers.

SL is right it will need a big car , I'm guessing the Sorrento might be up to it.

Try www.whattowcar.com for info.
