TD5 Discovery, Manual or automatic ??

My mate has just purchased a TD5 Discovery, he has been told that an automatic would have been a better option.

Anyone out there with any views on this ???

Thanks Tim

Tim tell your mate he has bought the right vehicle with a manual gearbox, the auto TD5 is gutless with the auto box almost dangerous when pulling away from a roundabout with a caravan on the back.

If you want total control of the vehicle particularly down steep hills the manual is far supierior and also much more economical.

there that will get some of you lot going.

Technically autos are useful for slow speed manouvering /reversing but with the Disco's low ratio box this becomes irrelevant, beyond this it is really down to personal preference, autos are more useful with low torque engines such as petrols where a change down is required at the slightest hill but with turbo diesels less gear changing is needed, some like the effortless motoring of an auto but I prefer to be in control myself, my father in law's Galaxy auto is horrible, all revs and no go and it searches up and down the gearbox on long hills, the journey in our manual is far smoother and economical.

Tim, if you're not used to an auto, try one for a few days. Not everyone likes them although there are quite a few members of this forum that loves em. You can get good and bad in both versions so it really is down to personal preference.

I don't like autos. They can rob an engine of power, fuel economy and fun. Must say it's nice to see a few pro manual members on the forum ;o)
