Yes I agree Wendy - whilst my old Discovery (1996) now gets serviced by a local "independent" LR specialist - the new Freelander we bought back in 2001 was serviced by Hunters LR Southampton who supplied it and their overall performance was excellent.

We do now have it serviced at the local "independent" LR garage mainly because a) it is 2 miles away rather than 25 b) it is cheaper and c) now that it is out of manufacturers warrenty a dealers stamp on the service book is not so important.

There are good and bad dealers just as there are good and bad cars of any make.

Still it makes me smile that our choice of vehicle evokes such passion (of both extremes!) in people.

Enjoy!!!!!

I don't think I've been rude but I apolgise if I have offended you.

No doubt JD Power don't own all the cars they report on so does that make their reports useless.

No doubt Which magazine is a waste of time as they do not actually own the goods themselves.

Do I have to apologise for not owning my works Disco 3 that was delivered new on the 5th of April this year and has been in the dealers since last week.

Word of mouth reccomendation is said buy many to be the best marketing tool, all I've commented on is direct word from owners not the "Chinese whispers" type comment

My works car I'm unable to comment on in you book as I do not own it.

I'm not sure how your world works Clive, but an Executive buyer for a hire car company has commented unfavourably on a model from a well known car brand re (NOT Land Rover) reliability as he has constant feedback on many thousands of cars and the one in particular does not do well.

By your way of thinking it seems as a non owner he knows nothing and would be wrong to comment to others.

this thread keeps going around in circles...I will say it again, there is nothing wrong if someone wants to post their bad experiences of a landrover, feel free...

but on the same note, please allow those who have had personal experience of GOOD landrovers/own a landrover/s who have had exceptional service from their dealer to state their opinions also.

Slating the car (any car) if you've had a bad experience is not rude, we like to hear people's stories....but to slate the owner/s is when its a bit much.

We are always gonna agree to disagree on this subject because some owners adore their landrovers and some dont.

Agreed - it is just getting silly now - of course a fleet manager views would be relevent - he works for the company that owns the vehicles.

My comment was at the litany of friends/relatives/blokes in the pub that all had Land Rovers that were diabolical unreliable heaps!

Sorry PC - first hand experience I respect - hearsay I take with a pinch of salt.

Now for goodness sake let it rest.

I don't think I've "slated" any owners chelsea.

My old courier boss and a close friend now gave me good advice re mortgage and finance that I passed on at the time to others, having stood beside him in his dealers whilst discussing his latest Range Rovere problems I'm still at a loss as to why my comment based on his experience is less valid than yours or anyone elses.

Our Salisbury offices Disco 3 was picked up yesterday and is fine again but I've just learnt it is its fifth non servicing visit to the dealers.

Ours should be back in the morning, its "well known"(dealers words) problem fixed. My friend Ray said he had a hard time with the French dealer when he has problems there. He was defending Land Rover whilst the dealer moaned about Disco 3 only to have his English Dealer and a regional Land Rover technical expert feed him what couild only be described as "bull" a few days later.

If Wendy, Clive and Steve could do me the honour of excepting that I believe them that their cars are reliable when I do not know them. Why the problem re my works car and another my fellow worker drives and two very good friends cars all within a year old have not been.

It seems that Land Rover ownership is the same as Harley Davidson ownership, I learnt my lesson there and will not return to this subject and enjoy my Disco when I get back on the road tomorrow.

Sorry Chelsea, I see what you mean.

I've been labeled a dirty greasy biker in the past but never have been and I have do admit to labeling some Harley Owners in the way Carolanne did.

We met some Bessacarr owners club types last year and all though we own one they seemed to be in a world of their own. One lady ended up with my wife and I to escape her husband and friends, she'd had enough of their obsession and wanted a new Bessacarr no matter who built it.

Bessacarr are part of the Swift group now.

hi steve,

have a 3.0 sve teranno on 53 plate, and had it since june 2004.its very comfortable(obviously not as comfortable as some family saloon cars) but it is comfortable.drives well, tows magnificently its an awsome tow car.have a no major problems with it,no steering problems that a lot suggest its the best towing vehicle ive had.the only downside is that it is expensive to run.

mpg 25 local

35 motorway

30 combined

then its all down to the way you drive figures can vary

servicing is very expensive,it has to be done by a nissan approved dealer, and no they will not allow any back street garage to service it.

it goes on a p1,p2 p3 servicing rota

p1 around

Thanks for all of your comments, especially those regarding Discovery's. I must admit to paying special attention to those offered for sale on the Autotrader website and found an awful lot of these vehicles advertised with comments like new gearbox fitted...., new engine fitted..., new transfer box...., new cylinder head...., sadly it was enough to put me off and indeed did so.

So what did i buy, not a Disco, not a Terrano but a Shgun 3.2 DiD auto. It's early days yet but I think I've made the right decision. My brand new Elddis Crusader Superstorm is sitting on my drive slowly being kitted out ready for a holiday and I can't wait to see how the Shogun and Superstorm perform. I'll keep you posted.

Yep - I reckon that's the choice I would make if I could afford it. Congrats
I couldn't afford a new one (The wife wouldn't let me), it's a 2001 model with a 5 peed auto/tiptronic box with a full history.

The engines are a bit vocal when accelerating but you can hear a pin drop when it's cruising. So far i am well impressed.

Were off to South Normandy via Poole/Cherbourg on Sunday, bit of a last minute decision due to current air travel problems.

I can't wait to try out the Superstorm.

I'll let you know how we get on.

Regards

Steve
