Yes I agree Wendy - whilst my old Discovery (1996) now gets serviced by a local "independent" LR specialist - the new Freelander we bought back in 2001 was serviced by Hunters LR Southampton who supplied it and their overall performance was excellent.
We do now have it serviced at the local "independent" LR garage mainly because a) it is 2 miles away rather than 25 b) it is cheaper and c) now that it is out of manufacturers warrenty a dealers stamp on the service book is not so important.
There are good and bad dealers just as there are good and bad cars of any make.
Still it makes me smile that our choice of vehicle evokes such passion (of both extremes!) in people.
Enjoy!!!!!
