Thoughts on old shape x-trail or old shape crv.

Due to a growing family we need a bigger car and are currently looking at the diesel x-trail or crv, both about a 05-06 plate.

I suppose I have a couple of questions to run past those that look in on this forum.

Firstly are the x-trails really as bad as "reader reviews" on what car and honest john, they imply turbo failure is almost guaranteed.

Secondly, whilst we were looking at spending up to £8.5k on a car, for which I'll probably get something with 40-50k on the clock I've also seen a couple of nice looking examples of both cars with 100k on the clock going for £5k ish! Given the hopeful advancements in modern technology, is a car with 100k on the clock something to be avoided like the plague?

Finally...anyone fancy a BMW 320d estate which has been my pride and joy for years and am now being forced to part with!

I think most modern vehicles are capable of clocking up in excess of 200K before they need major assemblies replacing with the important proviso that they must be serviced correctly.

Thats not the whole story though because some mile dependant issues will still cost you money and detract from the cars value and appearance.

We are talking stone chipped bonnets, cracked headlights, almost worn out brake discs, chipped windscreens and worn seats also carpark damage and kerbed wheels.

Some cars carry miles better than others, usually the expensive end of the market though like Merc, Lexus and BMW.

Dealers will always knock the price down for miles in excess of average for the above reasons, the formula is about

My wife had a 2002 X-trail Diesel the older lower BHP model that was excelent to drive but like a lot of X-Trails smoked badly on acceleration solo and created clouds when towing which made an awful mess of our new 2007 van bought at the same time. It still has not cleaned up over a year after selling car. The early diesel crv's have the same engine as her new CRV and it tows like a dream although last model towing limit is lower at @1500kilos.

i was surprised to see so many negative comments, unhappy owners.

If you go for the CR-V make sure that you go for the 2.2 diesel and that it will take the 100kg noseweight. They changed from 60kg around 05 I think. I tow with a 2.2 CR-V and it performs fine. Certainly one or two of the comments in Whatcar would seem to me to be down to people not reading/understanding the handbook.

We have a 2.2 diesel CRV Sport and tow a 1500kg Senator Indiana. Got it new in Oct 2005, and have done 35k miles, about 2.5 k towing. I think performance is excellent both solo and towing. Averages 38 mpg solo, 26ish towing. The car is totally reliable, and the build quality is well known. If you drive some of the 05- 06 vintage you may find a groaning noise from the rear diff on full lock. This is a known condition and Honda will fix it FOC even beyond 3-year warranty - it requires the oil in the diff to be flushed out and replaced. Ours has been done! It is probably forbidden to advertise on this forum, but I will be putting ours on Autotrader when we get back from our ski hols after 9 Feb, as we fancy the new shape CRV. I don't know if Mr Moderator would be willing to pass on contact deatils if you were interested...............

I have a 2006 XT, 2.2 ltr bought with 26,000 miles on the clock just 1 year ago. I have only done about 8,000 miles in it but at least half of this was pulling the caravan including some hairy rides over mountain passes in the French Alps with more hairpin bends than I care to think about. Up to now, (not wishing to tempt fate), I have had no problems at all other than the electric mirrors won't fold flat against the car if I need them to.

My only reservation is that when the engine is particularly cold it is extremely rattly but I am told by other owners and my Nissan dealer that this is 'normal'.

I have heard that with models only a little earlier than mine there was a high incidence of timing chain tensioning problems although I don't anyone who actually experienced this problem. If the timing chain needs sorting out it looks to be a very major / expensive problem. I think it is a complete 'engine out' job. There are anecdotal reports about turbos failing but, again, I dont know anyone actually experiencing the problem.

Would I recommend an XT ? Yes I probably would but, unless the timing chain tensioner had definately been replaced, I would be wary of anything pre 2006.

Hope this little bit helps but I know there are plenty of others who regularly write on this forum who have a lot more experience of XT's than I do. No doubt they will throw in their two penn'orth.

Chain pretension problems were on models upto around 2003.

also these sometimes surfered from black smoke on full throttle.

2003-2005 turbo failures, intercooler leaking oil.

2005-2007 euro 4 engines survered from a slight misfire around 2k to 2k2.

All the above should be on HONEST JOHN in more detail.

I have had the intercooler change, and no problems since,

i hope to pick up my new xtrail next week, and my son gets my old one.

I woulnt let him have it if i thought it would cost him.

I use my folding mirrors every day to get the car in the garage. And i calculate that thats nearly 3000 operations!

Because my car is garaged along with the central heating boiler cold start ups are to a minimum. However if it gets a cold start, it sounds a tin box full of rattling spanners, this is normal.

One final note the emmissions friendly euro 4 is not as economical as the 2004-2005 range.But only by about 1.5mpg.

The price of getting greener?

Unfortunately, like most other replies, I can only comment on the XT as I do not know anybody personally that tows with a CRV.

I drive a 2006 Columbia 2.2 Dci in which I have done 20,000 miles mainly towing 1,550 Kg.

It has been trouble free and I have had no problems with it. 4 of the couples we regularly rally with own XT's and one is on their 3rd one and another on their second - which must say something for them.

Only problem I see is high cost of servicing through a main agent. Just as an example a genuine Nissan fuel filter for a CAT 4 engine, which is changed every 2 years, is

I had my fuel filter changed this year. The service was an independant using nissan parts.

The Kia Sorento is a first class tow car and reasonably priced but it is much thirstier than the XT or CRV.

I have had a Aug 2006 X-Trail 2.2dCi Columbia from new and am surprised at the servicing costs some people have reported. I bought mine from a local main Nissan dealer (at a price lower than the What Car target) and the 12,000 and 24,000 mile services were circa

I suppose I must have slowed down now that I have retired but used to be a very heavy footed driver but I now get approx. 25 mpg towing and 39/40 solo with my 2006 XT.

I know it's a very contentious point (on caravan forum) but for most of it's life the XT has run on premium (Shell V Power) diesel. To me it gives a very slight increase in mpg but does seem to tow better with more pulling power but admit to finding no benefits when driving solo.

My x-trail is the Aventura,56 reg.The dealers which you should

know if you live near Norwich are Hammonds, Halesworth.WhatCar

2006 test mpg average was 39 solo as yours and some of the other

owners get.I get around 32 town/short runs and 35 long runs normally driven by my oh.My diesel comes via Tesco's,this could be the reason.I will have to have tests with Shell/others.Towing mpg about 25,with Bailey Burgundy mtplm 1400.

I went though this "power" fuel senario with my Audi 1.8T Quattro.

I used that expensive fuel optimax, a ridiculous cost above the standard fuel.

It was the correct octain for that car, but would run perfectly ok on the standard fuel.

I found no improvement in enconomy, but a slight performance increase.

For 99% of the time i had the car it ran on supermarket fuel, never had any problems, in all the years of driving the only time i've had problems was with an independant!

The xtrail has never had any fuel but "any" supermarket fuel

My economy figures are,

Towing around 30

local around 35

long run high speed around 35

economy run 60mph-65mph 42.2mpg

I consider the cars economy excellent for a near 1700kg "brick wall"

I've just finished clearing out my 2006 2.2 Diesel CR-V as it is finishes it's lease tomorrow. It has done nearly 60,000 miles and absolutely nothing has gone wrong in the 3 years I have had it. It was a very competent tow car for nmy 1350kg caravan and on my many work journies it has been a pleasure to drive. On my many trips Poole to Glasgow it has gobbled up the miles. Fuel consumption has averaged in the upper 30's , the tyres lasted nearly 40,000 miles, the brake pads 50,000 and the clutch appears as good as new. It is my 2nd CR-V having previously had a 2002 Petrol version and all I can say is Thank you Honda for making the last 6 years completely stress free.

I used Tesco's for years,when i had my 2ltr Touran i was getting

55-60 solo with all types of driving.Towing was about30 unless

i had cycles on top then it did drop.

With the x-trail unlike your economy 60-65mph,mine at best is 35

mpg.Mileage is 15k maybe it will get better as it gets more miles on the clock.I will try other diesel just to check.

That is reassuring as I also have a (new shape) 2.2 CRV. It has done only low mileage so far, but it has been spot on both towing and solo. When I was still working I had a company 2.2 Accord estate, and found that it had such a good engine, I spent my own money, and bought the CR -V when I retired! The CR-V has much more comfortable seating than the Accord, and with the firmer rear end, is much better suited to take care of higher noseweights. It still however uses that same very good diesel, and the gearing is better for towing. One question...What are you getting instead?

your xtrail has the euro 4 engine, the official figures for this engine are 1.5 mpg less (approx) than my 2004 model.

So perhaps that's as good as it gets?

No two engines or drivers are the same etc, all affects economy.

After 10k my engine was run in.
