On the setup you describe a small amount of grease will avoid un-due wear on hitch or ball. I use copper slip on my tow ball, mainly because it stay's put longer.

If you tow a trailer with the stabiliser integrated into the hitch, you will need to clean off the grease before hitching up as they rely on the dry friction between the pads in the hitch and the clean surface of the tow ball to provide stabilisation.

Methylated spirit should do the job, but wait a few mins after cleaning before you couple up to allow any residue to evaporate.
