tow car

I have a 1490kilo mtpl caravan which I tow with a pajero. I would like to buy a newer vehicle which gives better mpg and tow this van within 85% rule. Any good vehicles you can surgest will be greatfully recieved. EG 40+mpg solo.

hiya, i have a santa fe cdx 7 auto i get mid 20's towing a twin axel, mid 20's around town and motorway 40's. i think you would be lucky to find a car that does 40's all the time aprt from towing. it depends how much motorway driving you do.
 
The latest 171bhp xtrail weighs in around 1720kg, 85%=1462kg.

I have only towed with it once, the the computer was showing 33.4mpg, towing 1333kg.

Again solo the computer shows 40/44 mpg.

Someone with the same model on this site checked the computer with the brim to brim method, he found the computer was 2mpg optomistic.

Still i am amazed at the economy.

My previous 2.2 134bhp xtrail, was just as good a tow car, weighed around 1650kg.(85%=1402kg)

But solo gave high 30's, towing around 30mpg, which again i was happy with.

Obviously towing 1490kg will drop the mpg figures.

The other contributors have give some good advice, but I would like to remind you that there is nothing wrong in wishing to tow at 85% but it is definitely not a RULE. It is only a guideline, and some (but not all) outfits are perfectly controllable up to 100% and beyond providing the manufacture limits are not exceeded.

Controllability is not simply down to weight ratios, in addition it is a combination of how the load is distributed in the tow car and trailer, condition of the vehicles, and the driving habits amongst other factors.

Some outfits are good to over 100% others are difficult at much less. So don't be too pedantic about 85%
 
We have an Avondale Golden Osprey weighing in at 1500kg and we have recently changed to a Hyundai Tucson 2.0 CRTD CDX (56 plate). It is capable of towing 1600kg, but at 1500kg it tows like a dream, don't even know it's on the back. Think the 6 gears help, but we get around 27-30 around the town, 36mpg solo on motorways and around 28-30 towing - well put it like this, a tank of diesel lasts a lot longer these days than the previous car - Ford Maverick 2.7TD (1997). Only downside is the boot is smaller than we would have liked - the Sante Fe is bigger, but the amount of equipment far outweighs the lack of bootspace.
