Towbar for Merc CLS

Does anybody know of one?

My local MB garage doesn't know of one.

I'm just narrowing down my new car search.

If not this then it will be a 530d (again)

I'd check the weight plate, if the 2nd line has a figure differ nt to the 1st line it is homogulated for towing. From looking on their website (interactive owners manual), there appears to be no quoted gross train weight as the 2nd line is xxxxxxxx.

That looks like the car cannot legally tow.

Have you not considered an E320. Its just as fast but not so pretty and an estate makes a super towcar with a huge carrying space when the seats are down.

I'd get the Merc because its beautiful.

I'd get the BMW because the engine is just so so good.

I don't have any affinity with the MB badge really.

Audi's are overpriced (cruise control is an extra last time I looked and so were heated door mirrors????)

"its looks like the car cannot legally tow" what a load of rubbish all cars are able to tow something and considering its a fairly large car you would expect it to be able to tow at least a small single axle. There is no such thing as a car which cannot tow unless we're talking smart car or citreon c1

If a car is not type approved for towing, and the Merc CLS obviously isn't, then it cannot legally tow. It's as plain as that

The fact that MB have not bothered to do the necesary for towing with this vehicle is probably due to a very small numbers of potential cusomers involved wanting to tow. Its not a very common car and manufactures dont do anything more to a vehicle than they need to sell it.

Pity though because its just about the most beautiful car around.

considering its based on the mercedes e class it will have similar tow weights I would contact mercedes direct and see what they have otherwise if you really want the car you could buy the cls and buy an old 5 series for a few thousand and tow with that and use the cls the rest of the time

Caravanner,

You are confusing capable and legal.

A motor scoter is capable of being driven on a motorway , but it would be illegal. QED

Type approval for towing is not cheap and it is only natural that a car manufacturer may have second thoughts about about going through the approval process for a low volume model with little chance to recover such costs. With all the road tests that have to be carried out to determine the towload limit and rig tests to determine the maximum noseweight, not forgetting the associated necessary administrative work, I doubt whether the manufacturer will get any change out of
