Towcar suitability

I have been looking at a Sterling Eccles Sapphire van and have a 54plate Renault scenic 1.9dci. Looking at websites and speaking to friends(who tow caravans) i am getting conflicting advice as to whether the car would be ok to tow the van or not.

Would appreciate any opinions.

Renault Scenics for some reason have very low gross train weights.

We used to have an 05 1.9 DCi, which we understood had a 1300 kg tow weight, but that figure is for DRIVER ONLY. If the car is fully loaded (and whose isn't if you have a family), you can only tow 950kg. BEWARE.

My data tells me that the Sterling Eccles Sapphire has a max. weight (MTPLM) of 1475kg. Unless I'm mistaken, the Scenic has a max. permissible towload of 1300kg and that even reduces if the car is fully laden (due to the low gross train weight limit that Zafiral referred to), so it looks like a 'no-go'.
