Towing mirror minefield query…

A mate of mine is coming over from ‘The Dark Side’ (MH) & is waiting for his new caravan. I’ve been trying to advise on different aspects & thoughts but he (& I) are confused about mirrors. We’ve always used bog standard Milenco Aero something or another’s for both our Xtrail & Jag F Pace so we’re unaware that there are so many others to choose from. Flat, convex etc.
He’ll be towing a 2 berth Swift Sprite with a Lexus NX.
What would you recommend?

I use the Milenco grand Aero's, work well on the SantaFe, but have just advised my brother to buy the EMUK for his Sportage. I will let you know next weekend as Thursday will be his first time towing with these.
Why spend my money on them when he can. 😃

They look very nice but I'll stay with my Milenco aero mirrors - 1 They don't list my car 2 What would happen if I ever changed my car for one not listed (always assuming they actually made one for my car that is )
 
With my Milenco Grand Aero's, I can fold the mirrors without removing them, handy when we used to go on the ferry to France.
Thanks for making me aware of that. My extender mirrors can clamp to either the top edge of my mirror case (and mirrors can fold without removal) or the bottom edge (in which case I have to switch off mirror folding). I prefer and normally clamp to the bottom edge, because it's more secure and stable. But for my trip on the ferry in a couple of weeks, I'll remember now to fit them to the top!

I do my fitting with the door mirrors folded - that way I know they won't hit the glass or the bodywork when automatically folding.
 
I went from Milenco Grand Aero which were very difficult to fit the same every time we went out. The EMUK are a much better fit, which is easy to replicate time after time and IMHO over the life of the car are worth it

With the Grand Aero's on my SantaFe, I just put a small mark on the mirror "frame/ moulding" and refit them the same place every time. Very seldom do I have to re adjust the mirrors.

I do the same. I've had these Grand Aeros on 4 cars over the last 14 years or so. Only thing I've done is purchase the "V" blocks for VAG cars when I had my VW Tiguan, and these blocks have been perfect for the Santa Fe too.
Money well spent IMO
 
.....saw a large Audi car parked up today.
(no caravan)
It didn't have mirrors, it had small cameras in the end of 15cms thin stalks on each side where mirrors would normally be.
Presumably the driver gets rear views on a dashboard screen.
I have no idea how you would fit towing mirrors or whether the stalks extend.
Maybe Audi haven't even considered caravan towing with their camera equipped cars?
Anyone more gened up than me?

@Gafferbill:- that makes me think , my friend has just got his new company car , a Polestar, and like the Audi it has no mirrors not even a rear view one ,all cameras ( no rear window either). I'll have to ask him how he becomes legal when towing , he may have to have a rear view camera on the caravan.

All Polestars have wing mirrors. They dont have frames, but the suck it an see mirrors work brilliantly.
 
Aprt from method to mount extension mirrors, what system the car has for side mirrors is largely immaterial if the can see past the trailer. The user will still have to extension mirrors to be road legal.

I am not certain if the construction and use regs would allow camera based rear view extensions any way, so it may need real mirrors for extensions.
 
UK construction and use regulations do allow indirect vision devices providing they meet the C&UR. A digital camera as an external mirror is cheaper than a conventional mirror for an Audi.

Don't most newer HGVs come with cameras as the requirement is for them to see sides and rear and the cameras fulfil that function as per the legislation so probably no need to external mirrors?
