I have towed a 2000 Sterling eccles Coral 5 berth with my 05 2.0 Tdci c max for the last 2 years [ roughly 90% match] and its fantastic . Very stable and plenty of torque . Also a very comfortable car to drive both towing and solo with mpg of 48 solo and 32 towing . I know you have asked about the 1.8 but the 2.0 has a 6 speed gearbox which does make life easier especially towing

it all depends on the spec AL, and how many options are fitted, but it doesn't really matter so long as the driver is confident and loads it correctly.

now back to the original question, ive never used a c max for towing but i have extensively used both a s max and a new style galaxy and both made superb tow cars. i had absolutely no problems with either and would definitely have another one once i don't need a transit any more. i would be very tempted to go for the 2.0 tdci though the 1.8 is not as refined or efficient and in my honest opinion 6 gears are essential despite some saying they never use 6th as they seem to think 5th is more economical, if you drive all day at below 55 then 5th is probably better but stick to 60 or above on the continent where allowed and 6th is far better.

We have found that MPV type vehicles make very stable towcars, they are designed to be stable when carring a relatively high load at high speeds

I found our S-max to be more economical in 5th rather than 6th but only up to 10,000 miles, once it was run in and the engine was better sealed for the higher cylinder pressures when using higher gears, then 6th became the most economical gear.

According to my owners manual, the maximum braked trailer weight for my 1.8 Tdci Cmax (06 plate) is 1500KG.

I tow an Avondale golden Mayfair 556/6 and it is great....

According to my 06 brochure my kerbweight is 1495kg. I found that it towed a Bailey Ranger 510/4L @ 1250kg fine, no traction issues even on wet grass. I have retired mine for towing now as it siezed on #4 cylinder on the M4 with the van on the back. The van has gone to be replaced with a Lunar Lexon SI, which at 7.2m shipping and 5.85m body was a bit too long to be happy with for me...

Used to get between 27 and 32mpg towing the Ranger.
