Unfortunately I don't have the option of locking a thread.

Sometimes threads become so off track, degenerating into mud-slinging, that becomes impossible to moderate. It would takes hours reading every word carefully in case it could cause offence.

Anyway, talking about trolls and calling them names only encourages their return.

I'm getting my secretary to draft a letter to Haymarket Towers instructing Lady Newby to make a bonus payment for this month on His Moddyships salary for working extra hard. I have also instructed her Ladyship to look into a more technical way of deleting abusive posts because rubber erasers went out with the Ark.

Dear Moderator.

What now?

Even a humble polite posting seems to have been removed!

Even Haymarket surely realise that despite forum guide lines you still have a responsibility under human rights legislation and our rights to freedom of speech and expression in a free society.

You are depriving us of the right to respond in a polite reasonable manner, with the greatest of respect I believe you

are actually acting in a way that that is deep into a grey area of the law.

Rules are open to interpretation based on the varying levels of understanding by those they are aimed at, and you have still have to work with in the law I understand all though some may in their mind interprate a reply as offensive.

This may sound silly to you, but this is a serious matter and blanket censorship infringes on our human rights.

It is not good for Haymarket who would surely defend the freedom of the press with their press empire grown in a free and open society to then opress free comment and speech in a voluntary forum.

Even our elected MP's engage in a little name calling and mud slinging along with press comments that are often far from complimentary at times.

We have the same rights so as much as I respect your position could you please moderate your actions more carefuly.

Cris,

While I understand your annoyance at having had your inoffensive post removed and although I agree with your argument, this is not a "public" forum, it is owned by a private company (Haymarket) and by becoming a member, you have by default agreed to abide by their rules. To say that having your posts removed is an infringement of your "human rights", I think is a bit OTT.

I am sure that the moderator respects your right to free speech, but unfortunately they have to oversee the posts with some degree of censorship to protect themselves and their members. We all know that the written word is much more open to misunderstanding that the spoken one and threads sometimes turn into slanging matches and when one or two of the contributors resort to insults and nastiness and the rest trying to defend themselves, it ends up with all the children having the ball taken off them, not only the naughtiest one ;-). If THEY can't play nicely, then we can't play at all.

cris - you and I have agreed on most things on this Forum and I believe you feel as I do that the Troll infection is not best ignored (they just pop up under another name) but challenged.

I believe this makes life uncomfortable for them as they no longer feel in control.

However, I also believe that this is just a caravan forum and PCV Moderators have so far done nothing to impinge on anyone's freedom of speech. If the subject matter evolves into a touchy area as I think it did (Racism) then I respectfully suggest that a caravan forum is not the most suitable place.

However a proper debating chamber most certainly is!

I sent you an email to explain the reason I removed your post. Did you not receive it?

Did I miss a post, I never saw any racist remarks with the exception to Trolls. I have been told recently that this forum has been reported to the Race Relations Commission by His Excellency, Argwed Polnadiur, Ambassador for the Republic of Trolldom at the Court of St. James for degenerating Trolls and others of small stature. If their request is upheld this forum will be closed down but what his Excellency forgets is, if it is closed down all his subject Trolls will be forced to go underground again :O(

I respectfully beg to differ Janey1.

This is a public forum as it is open to anyone with internet access to read. You only log on to be able to post.

Haymarket will have various reasons for kindly offering this service. As a company they would be foolish and naieve not to recognise that they benefit from much of the advice given in the forum.

No doubt others like myself have become regular or more regular loyal customers of the magazine partly due to this site. Haymarket have marketing benefits from people posting freely here and in other forums. "helps breed brand awareness and loyalty" !

They therefore have a legal duty to uphold human right, freedom of speech and other laws.

We all have the choice to partake or not partake so if anyone sadly feels hurt by a comment or silly name calling why bother to respond!

Haymarket have a corporate responsibility to freedom of expression and should try harder to ensure that there concerns do not give way to unfair and possibly illegal censorship.

Respect!

Cris

Our FAQs clearly state that on this forum posting messages which are abusive or defamatory is not acceptable.

This leaves it open to interpretation, in context, by the moderators.

We won't always get it right, but we'll do our best.

I'm with Janey on this one (but who's counting?) the site has to be moderated, it has a set standard and we should try to remain within that standard. If we stray then we deserve what's coming to us, through past experience I know we get given a long rope to choke ourselves with. We agree to the terms and conditions when we sign up, it's just unfortunate that at the moment enforcement of the rules means catching up with the culprits after the evil deed has been done. To my mind all these problems have emanated from one person and his multi personalities, not from the regular contributors, the thing is, it's hard to ignore someone intent on causing trouble. Think "disruptive child" and deal with it that way.

For those genuinely interested in Troll, Dwarf, Golem, Werewolf and the odd Vampire - can I suggest some of Terry Pratchetts novels. He has the Trolls wearing cooling fans on there heads to increase their intelligence as silicon based life forms brains work faster as they get colder.

His writing is excellent and certainly makes me laugh. One of his characters is a beautiful blond girl who changes into a wolf every month. One of my favourites lines is where she ponders the problem of PMT with another female colleague and says she has the added problem of waking up every 28 days to find she has eight nipples.

Another is a Vampire who is into photography - when the Flash goes of he collapses into dust but keeps on him a vial of blood that smashes as it hits the ground and so regenerates him!

You have to read them to get the full "picture" - but certainly worth the effort.
