troutbeck head cc site, penrith, cumbria

We stayed for 3 nights in May this year, on route to a wedding in Scotland. The site is very nice and split into 2 areas, the upper part appearing to be an extension and contains the serviced pitches. There are also some static caravans in this upper area. From here you can walk into the forestry area.

Things to do - we did the obligatory boat trip on Ullswater.

Here is an extract from the CC website: "A lake cruise on Ullswater is a must, with the option of a scenic walk between Howtown and Glenridding (7m). For the energetic, the Rookin House Farm Centre next door offers go-karting, quad bikes, archery and horseriding (to name but a few activities), but it is advisable to book in advance to avoid disappointment"

Its a lovely site set in beautiful scenery. Keswick and Derwentwater are only a short drive down the A66, with many attractions and great walks, including Catbells which is one of the easiest fell walks with stunning views.

Whinlatter forest is also not to far away, with a great vistor centre, walking and cycling trails.
 
hello, ive just booked to stay in between xmas and new year, (thats all that was left), never been before, but like the sound of it, ED
 
We thought the site was ok, the adventure centre next door is more geared to group bookings and when we took our 3 kids they didnt seem to want to know! We paid for them to go horse riding and were told that we had to lead the horses ourselves (not good when you have no experience with horses) Most good walks are a drive away aswell as Glen Riding etc.. Its a nice well kept site, play area for kids very basic, more suited for a quiet time or families who like to get in the car and go off walking, sailing etc. One bonus is the easy access off the main road, there are sites at Glen ridding with cracking walks at your feet, but depending on the size of your unit the twisty narrow roads can be a problem. Would'nt rush back.
 
Hi Jo-anne, We will be there from Mon 22 SEP to the end of the month and will give feed back on our return. Are you the Jo-anne who bought the Sedona last year? We still have ours and its proving a very good tow car for our new twin axle Searcher.

colin, yes its me but i have a 57 plate santa fe cdx 7 auto. i gave them the sedona back it was in the garage to long im afraid.

maureen i have to plan ahead. my bro and sis in law have jst bought a van so theres even more planning now. im possibly going away for the full 6 weeks with the kids next summer so i need to plan plan plan and pick all your brains.

maureen im not cleaver enough to go onto mastermind. i cant even multitask and im the worst speller going.

Sorry to butt in.

I'm off there this weekend for only my third trip. (my second time out with my Van was to Spain, must write that one up).

Anyway, how far to the nearest pub? Walk or drive?

Hi alan,just checked when i visited Troutbeck Head June 2003, both going up to and returning from Freshwater Bay, Like a fool I thought the door flyscreen would keep them out, alas soon discovered no when the van ceiling was a black mass of them, had to get rid of them by applying a damp cloth took a while but fineally with the door closed we managed to clear the van.

Was up there again last May 2007 again going north this time to Stirling, no midges, but the weather was fine and sunny they do not appear to like that.Returned via Berwick upon Tweed never again.

Ian, it's about one mile to the Troutbeck Inn at the junction with the A66. The site is wonderful with fabulous views of Blencathra. We did find midges a slight problem in June but not serious.

Just got back. My first visit to a 'club site'. Really really nice. Beautiful views. Went up for a race in Glenridding (15k Trail race). Will now seek out other club sites.

This is my first caravan/season and I was worried about being warm. Left the heating on 1kw overnight and we were great. I do feel the guilt pangs about this though. Can't be good using up this much electricity.

Hi Ian,

Glad you had a good time. Troutbeck is one of my favourite sites. Don't worry about the heating. It's not nice to wake up in the middle of the night feeling cold!
