Twin axle 6 berth

We're looking for a 6 berth twin axle for us and our 5 kids. So far we have found two options:

2005 ex display Compass Corona 636 for 13K

2003 used Avondale Argente 650-6 for 10K

We feel the build quality and layout is better in the avondale but the compass is "new" and has the 3 year warranty.

Towcar is a disco

Any advice welcome

Search the site for Avondale problems.

My near neighbours inlaws bought a new Avondale last September and that has been in the dealers for a month with similar panel problems as mentioned here.

Cheers Cris, I'll avoid the avondale then as it's out of warranty too.

Thinking about it the main question I'm asking is whether I'd be better going to the top of my budget for the entry level compass with a 3 year warranty or buy a used better quality van.

I'm swayed towards the new van but wonder whether it will last.

We're looking at the van as a long term investment for 10+ years.

I would not worry about quality issues on Avondales, I have had a Landranger since 2003 and it has been faultless, not one repair has been needed.

However if you are looking for a 10 year investment common sense would suggest buying the new one would be the best way forward.

Thanks Graham. I'll try to strike a deal this weekend. The salesman has been back to me with 12K for the ex display 2005 compass or a brand new 2006 model reduced to 14k.

I'll try for a starter pack too.

Thanks Jo-anne, the quattro looks very interesting especially the bathroom(so does the price). We'll take a look at one this weekend. One of the reasons we liked the Avondale was the larger toilet room and seperate shower room. I'm disabled (and calling myself Shrek is rather descriptive!!) The small combined room in the compass is a major compromise. The compass's strength though is for overnight stays or bad weather we could manage without the awning. We could sleep all 5 kids easily in the back of the van, 3 on the wide double with two bunks above.

Sleeping 7 in 21' will always be a compromise. My maths says 3' each, LOL.

You also beat me to mentioning the motor mover. It is one of the adaptions I need to manage the van with my disability. Recomendations on make and supplier appreciated!! The dealer quoted

hi, find out if you can clain the vat back on the caravan or motor mover because you are disabled.i know you can on the motorhomes but i tried to do it as my son is registered disabled but i didnt need any alterations.we have the reich move control.for a twin its

Vat... many thanks, never thought of it. I can't find anything exact on the net but will certainlty have ask the dealer.

My mother is disabled as was my dad, the dealers may not have a clue about zero vatting goods for disabled clients.

With building alterations my parents took weeks with various VAT offices before she found a VAT lady who told her the simple way for the builder to Zero VAT the goods and services he was supplying.

Basically your name and address and a signature from you to say that you are registered disabled so that the supplier does not have to add 17.5% and has a record of you for his books is all it takes I believe. If a dealer has no experience of these dealings it may be worth your while getting the details yourself from HM Customs as a dealer may get a negative reply from their local VAT office as so many appear to be in the dark about what disabled people are entitled to!

hi shrek i have a 2005 compass rallye 635 great caravan with no problems yet and has a separate shower not sure if ypou could squeeze all your kids in though, the only thing with the compass is the winterhoff hitch is a pain to hitch and unhitch sometimes

did you can even claim vat on a new bed my mum in law did as she is registered disabled.

Nice to know the Compass is a good van:)

The 636 will problably suit us better than the 635 due to the number of beds.

Had another look at the Compass and the display model has been well used and is looking tatty. A new 2006 model is

Our son has recently bought a twin axle 6 berth Bailey Carolina which he is delighted with.....it has an end bathroom,2permanent side bunks and a side dinette which also makes up into 2 bunks.
