dear all i have a choice of new company car

1-volkswagen passat 1.9 tdi 105 brake horse==estate or saloon

2-volkswagen passat 2.0 tdi 140 brake horse==estate or saloon

3-Audi a6 2.0 tdi 130 brake horse==estate or saloon

tow a bailey pageant averuge which ways 1386kg loaded

which is the best tow car?,i used to tow with a vw passat 1.9tdi 100 brake horse which was fine and powerful so with company car tax as it is the the 105 tdi would be the best bet,but is it really worth having the 2.0tdi 140 brake horse or even the Audi ag 2.0tdi 130.

your thoughts are much appciated as choices are so hard as the company have only givin this choice recently,only a month ago i the choice would have been 1.9 tdi 105.

so please help me out,if only things were simple in life i wouldnt have to ask you experienced caravanners .

thanks again to all who reply

Personally with that weight of Caravan I would go for a little more power. Are you sure it was a 100bhp you had before and not the 110bhp which did pull very well? You are right about the choice being difficult. It might well depend on how many long trips you do. The more powerful cars are easier on the driver. Do bear in mind the kerb weights as well, for towing I have noticed a huge difference (for the better) in a heavier car.

Good luck

hi rob,yes it was a 100 bhp,as i remember when i ordered it i was told i could have a 1.9tdi 130 then was tld i could only have a 1,9tdi 100 bhp from my fleet manager back in june 2001.injune 2004 i took a choice of a 2.0 tdci mondeo 115 bhp 5 speed,grat car but on and off has broken down on me,thats why i want to go back to a vw as ford service is rubbish,reliability is very poor with this existing car.someone told me that the vw 140 2.0 tdi was overpowered for towing,in the resest that it has not enough "grunt" at low torque,take of power so that makes me think is the 1.9 tdi 105 a better car to go for.i tow approx 6 times a year.

I think it depends on your expectations.

I would personally find a 100 bhp Passat underpowered towing that sort of weight.

I previously had a 130TDI Sport which was brilliant, and now have a 140 TDI Sport Estate towing and Elddis Avante at 1375kgs and have no problem. Yes, it is peakier than the old 130, and the gearing is taller(too tall?) but apart from the initial few feet until you`re moving which does take a little more revs, it is absolutely fine.

The car is quite a bit heavier than the old model, and the general opinion on the 105 is that it`s not really much cop at towing, but as I said earlier, it depends on your expectation. Also, the engine is now sounding quite agricultural.

The Audi? Dunno. I do know there is supposed to be more space in the Passat Estate than the Audi, and if like me it`s a company car only you can decide if the badge is worth the extra tax.

All cars are a compromise, my choice was the best compromise for me.

Hope this helps in some way.
