volvo s80 2.4 automatic 2003.

if anyone out there tows with one of these, does it need an oil cooler to tow a caravan or is there one already fitted. thanks in anticipation need info for a friend (new caravaner)

Yes, I tow happily with one. It has an oilcooler already fitted as standard. The only thing to look out for is the colour of the transmission fluid. It should be bright red. If it looks brown then it is past its 'sell by date' and needs changed. This is a job you can do yourself, but may be easier to get the dealer to do as they can re fill it through the dip stick hole better than a layman. If your car has a high mileage then you may wish to get it checked out as things may have worn just a bit too much. Check the suspension as the standard springs will cause the back end to drop with 75 kg on it. Fitting Nivomats will help immensely.

The towing limit is 1800 kg so should be fine for any van within the weight range of the car itself. You may find, if you have a petrol model that 5th gear is not always practical and sometime locking down to 4th is best. However, it will change up and down without any real hassle. The diesel is obviusly a better tow car, but the petrol is usually cheaper and less hashed and I find it much smoother and quieter.
