Volvo S80 d5 2.4. Automatic

Pretty much the saloon version of the V70 and that's a superb towcar. I've had two. The d5 engine is well up to the job and is the first choice of many.

We had one and it was great for towing and very comfortable however with all auto boxes there is a problem with it not knowing which gear to select. Ford Mondeo have similar issue as same gearbox. The only other issue was if on a grass site the front wheels tend to spin. Eventually we traded it in for a 4 x 4.

They are fitted with an Asin warner TF55sc autobox with torque converter.Without doubt one of the toughest proper autoboxs available if maybe a bit old fashioned. But its news to me of gear change problems.Flush them at 30k.

I had the XC70 pior to my current car, with the D5 and that engine was brilliant for towing. I too found the autobox seemed to hover between gears, it wasnt a fault with the box per se, just that it alwatys seemed to be on the point of changing up or down. The OP appears to have the old fashined box with D,1,2,3. Surely he would always be in drive unless specifically needing a lower hold. My box, I always towed in sequential so I had full control over it and that made a big difference to fuel economy.

For how long have they been fitted with a proper torque converter gearbox as our S80 had the horrible gearbox which could not decide which gear to select if slowing down and then accelerating? It was a major flaw on the car and the Ford Mondeo has inherited the same gearbox.
