Help required, can someone please give me a definitive answer/

I have a Bailey Pageant Burgundy, 1400Kgs.

I currently tow with a VW Sharan 1.9TDi and am getting out of the company car trap and thinking of buying a second hand Volvo V70 D5 (approx 3yrs old). Will it tow? How will it tow and is the Volvo any good?

Thanks in advance and a Merry Christmas to all

Dave,

I did the same as you are planning about 7 years ago, and at the last change looked at the Volvo V70, Mercedes C270, and the other usual suspects.

The V70 has very good seats - which is probably the most important thing in a car.

The D5 engine is good, more power and torque than (what I guess will also be a three year old) Sharan. So it should be better than your Sharan, and many people on here have the D5

In the V70, you do have the desirable AWD Geartronic D5 combination - but this might be difficult to find pre-owned

The only issue that put me off the V70 was getting in to the car, I'm reasonably tall and my head clips the door edge when getting in and out - but that's just me

I've got a V70 D5 that's just 2 years old and tow a Bailey Senator Arizona, 1472kgs.

It is the best towcar I've had and very economical, especially on cruise control. It's also got load compensating suspension as a factory fitted extra.

I'm 6'-2" and 17st and have no problems whatsoever with space or headroom.

You won't be disappointed

Hi,

Bought a new D5 Geartronic V70 3 yrs ago to tow our Lunar Lexon (1400Kg). Absolutely fantastic, comfortable, economic and tows very easily, rarely drops out of top gear on Mways and climbs hills with ease, even when full of French wine.

There is, however a downside, the turning circle is poor if you have the 17" wheels.

I will get another, but will get the AWD version (not XC70) because it can spin the wheels easily on wet grass.

No problems getting in and out, I'm 6' 1".

The V70 and the S80 (old model) basically share the same floor plan and engines. It is a matter of choice if you wish a saloon, or an estate car. The saloon has more rear leg room and is more spacious, but of course does not allow the conveyance of big items in the rear, but as the rear seat folds down, the actual floor area is nearly the same. Only wardrobes may prove an issue.

As mentioned the turning circle is to 'Titanic' standards, which is a retrograde step from the older Volvos and the 17" wheels can easily rub against the wheelarch. However, to quote many of the 'guides' such as Parkers. the S80 is probably one of the most comfortable cars on the road for long distance travelling. The V70 is slightly less so, but has the advantages of the estate format. The V70 also tends to be more expensive secondhand as it has the 'popularity cachet' over the S80.

Just one small caveat. The new S80, which will be followed shortly by a new V70 only offers a geartronic version rather than both automatic and geartronic. Also the towing limit has been reduced from 1800 kg to 1600 kg for the geartronic, not really important for the majority of 'tuggers' but is curious. Is it 'weaker' than the full automatic I wonder?
