Volvo XC90 - any good?

Volvo XC90 - any good?

Looking to get a new tow car since my Freelander 2, turned out to be more hassle than it is worth, I've considered the Disco 3 and the Nissan Pathfinder, but a Volvo dealer has put a very temping offer forward for a used XC90 D5 Geartronic

Does anyone tow with one of these cars and what is it like?

Never driven one before but I have heard that you get a lot of car for the money and is on par with the Mercedes, BMW's etc of this world. The Geartronic is supposed to be very good.

Well I'll soon find out just purchased a 2 yr old D5 SE with the Geartronic Auto box, on paper it stacks up 90 kg noseweight and max tow 2250kgs

Hi william

I tow with a Merc ML270. My friend has a volvo xc90 and tows a abbey spectrum (aprox 1700kg) He thinks its OK not great. I had a loan of a nissan pathfinder for a week towing my Bailey Carolina. I loved it that much i bought one. Get it 7th september. The deals you can get on the pathfinder are really good ( the new one comes out october). Evans Halshaw Pathfinder Aventura

I have little doubt its "good" but I tow tested it together with, an X5, Merc ML 270, Disco3 three and VW Toureg [then 2.5L], all diesels with autoboxes and it was an easy choice of the overall best for us, the Disco3.

The XC90 was the least happy in settling on and holding a gear both towing and solo on other that free flowing roads, it switches seemingly excessively. Pity its otherwise a very nice machine and probably will hold value best of the bunch.
