Volvo XC90 D5 2016

Hi all
looking to upgrade my tug to the above model auto box
my van is T/A at 1800kg mtplm
Anyone on this forum tow with an XC 90 with the 2ltr engine with 8 speed auto box
Any constructive advice tips would be most appreciated 👍

The Volvo's have regained their status as being good tow cars, and the outfit will probably be fine.

Its very important with TA's to check your nose load at the same height as the coupled hitch, and in another recent thread a Volvo (with an "R"pack ) was having some jockey wheel clearance problems, but a normal set up should be fine.

Its almost certain that with a XC90 and an 1800kg MTPLM you must have driving licence entitlement BE on your licence.

thanks Prof for your reply and yes its an Rdesign I'm going for and yes I passed my test in 1977 so have B+E on my licence

Thank you for your response.

Whilst this refers to the XC60 there might be aspects that might apply to your XC90

I have used the wifes xc60 r design on our t/a swift with the same mtplm and had no issues at all , it actualy coped with ease.

If changing to the Volvo XC 90 check the maximum load that the towbar can handle as some XC90 were under 100kg which can make towing uncomfortable.

Presuming the car follows the EU type approval regulations, the minimum nose load (S value) the tow bar must be able to handle is at least 4% of the towed weight limit.

That is probably correct however certain D5 models although they could tow well in excess of 2250kgs the maximum load on the towbar was as low as 90kg. New models that can tow up 2500kg this has crept up to about 130kg.

4% of 2250 kg is 90kg and iaw the type approval regulations so if the car can tow well in excess of 2250 kg it’s specified nose load on the towbar is incorrect.

Towbars can have a lower noseweight limit than the car itself - I wonder if that is the case where the limit is only 90kg.
