Thank you Andrew.
Thank you for the information, just what I was looking for, do you mind me asking.....did you buy from a main dealer and what sort of deal did you get?Having had two 3.0 Jeep Grand Cherokee's ( CRD and Limited) we changed to a new Touareg in February. (3.0 Altitude).
I have used it for several weekends and 2 main hols so far - a week in North Yorkshire at Easter and then just got back on Saturday from a week in the Peak Disrict followed by a week in the Yorkshire Moors. During these 2 weeks I covered about 1600 miles in total.
Only mention this as the journeys between sites provided a range of driving conditions - motorways - down to A/B roads and some quite steep climbs.
Our van has an MTPLM of 1900kg fully loaded and with everything for the 2 week holiday for 5 the car handled brilliantly.
Whilst I would have no hesitation about having another Grand Cherokee the Touareg, (in my opinion) , is overall a better car. I average roughly 22-24 mpg when towing, 27/28 mpg on the stop start journey to and from work and up to 34 mpg on the motorway.
When not towing it is practical and comfortable day to day and it is no slouch. My wife has a 320D just now but will often take the Touareg.
More room inside for passengers than the Jeep but the boot is small in comparison to some 4x4's. Only gripe is that the steering takes a little getting used to at first as it is light and does not give as much feedback as other 4x4's I have driven - but you quickly get used to this and is a plus point when manoeuvring the van.
As the previous poster has mentioned there is a new model just coming out so if looking at the outgoing model there are some great deals to be had. I considered delaying our purchase but as the changes were typical Volkswagen - not a radical departure from the current model and the deal on offer was good decided to go with the current model.
Hope this helps.
