Hi All

Van 03 Abbey Aventura 325(with the vogue upgrade) MTPLM 1380kgs

Tow car Seat Alhambra 1.9tdi (90bhp). Good tug 80% match very stable bit low on power struggles on long hills. Just had it chipped to (120bhp) Will tow van first time since chipping over Easter should be considerably better. If I had to moan about something it would be that it doesn't like wet grass. On wet grass it reverses better than it goes forward.

Away first time this year on the 4th April for 5 days a week somewhere at spring bank & 2 weeks in the lore (I think I've spelt that wrong) valley in Aug & as many weekend as poss. O happy days are here again la lala lala la la la la. Lala.

My caravan is a 2003 Swift Celeste 13/2

I have a Kia Carens 2 lit auto disel and it tows wonderfully.

On buying it I was told it was heavier than my Vectra 2.2 auto petrol which I was trading in. thus I didn't examine further its actural weight.

I've now looked in the hand book and it gives GVWR as 1975 What is Gross Vehicle Weight Rating compared to kerbwwight?

Your help will be appreciated

We have just bought a brand new Sterckeman Starlett 526 CE (1150kg) and tow with a Toyota Estima 2.4 and a Citroen Berlingo. (The Berlingo is at 100% .... anyone any experience with this as a tow car??)

Just as an afterthought, we used to have a Grand Cherokee (2001) as a tow car and it was awful, (to me the towbar was too high and this led to instability issues). The Toyota is heaps better as a) lower towbar, b) long wheelbase = stability, and c) little or no overhang i.e. wheels at each corner.

Just a thought ...

We tow a Lunar Gemini 615 20' six berth twin axle MTPLM 1400kg with a Ford S-Max 2.0 tdci, our 4x4 towing experience is limited to a 1993 Discovery, our old VW Sharan beat it hands down for on road stability (but getting to the road can be slower), we expect even better performance from the S-max when we head off to Derbyshire tomorrow.

I tow our Bailey ranger 500/5 with my 2002 BMW 525 petrol with an auto / steptronic gearbox , its nice comfy and you barely notice the van behind you but sometiimes you have to kock the box into manual to put it into top gear if its a bit hilly , used to tow with a 520 manual but it struggled with the hills `

Today I saw an Abbey Spectrum 520 1999 I think being pulled by a Rover 75 CTD WOW I am amazed the car was also four up so a fair load being pulled. Anyone know what kind of match that is and is it safe as I fancied a Spectrum 420 1999 and I use a 407 2.0 HDI saloon with a kerbweight of 1660kg

From the data I have, a 1999 Abbey Spectrum 520 has an MTPLM of 1660kg. The maximum permissible towload for the Rover 75 CTD is 1600kg, so making allowances for at least 60kg noseweight, he would be just on the right side of the legal limit if the caravan were fully laden. However, the weight ratio would be a fraction over 100% so he would only be legal on that count if he passed his driving test before the 1st January 1997.

Whether it's safe or not depends on a number of other technical issues and how it was driven more than anything but weight ratios as high as that are extremely demanding and can be very strenuous and should therefore be avoided whenever possible.
