What Towcar?

Hello Folks! I will be ordering my first caravan very shortly - probably the Bailey Pageant Monarch. I've got to change my car - current car a 1.6 petrol Seat Leon won't pull anything! I've whittled the choice of towcar down to either a Mondeo 2.0 (130) Tdci or the equivalent Vectra diesel. I've had positive feedback on the Mondeo, but little comment on the Vectra. Which should I go for?

We had a Vectra 2.0 tdi for 4 years. It pulled a swift challenger 4 berth really well but the last year we had trouble in top gears car felt stuggish. Just bought mondeo 2.0 tdi, Pulling no problem. I love it I'm 5'2" hubby 6' moving the seats for who is towing no problem now. The only thing I think about is if the electronics fail were stuck with one seat position.

we've got a 2.2dti 5dr 02 model and have had nothing but trouble with it when towing.when driving solo it is a great car,the problem seems to be the turbo cannot get rid of the exhaust gasses quick enough and so cuts the turbo out.so far its been back to the dealers 4 times and touch wood it actually seems ok now.this is a common problem on the 2.2dti,but when it works properly it is a powerfull, torquey engine .hope this helps in your decision

Thanks for your comments, really helpful. I've test driven both & felt that there was little to choose, so it will come down to the best deal in the end!

On the recommendation of someone in the motor trade I bought a Skoda Octavia Hatchback 1.9 TDi 130 bhp last May. Its a great tow car.

In the summer we went to France and covered 1600 miles of which 1000 miles was towing. Over the whole holiday the car averaged over 31 mpg and travelled happily on cruise control in 5th gear(of 6 gears) all day on the motorway with no effort at 100/110 kph.

I had a 2.2 vectra estate on a 51 plate, nothink but trouble when towing, but lovely car solo, I have just changed a frontera 2.2 and really happy with it, although 4x4's are not for everybody but it drives like a car, and we tow a 505 elddis odyssey.
