We are 4 four car household, i have a 406 hdi which is perfect for towing, i have just bought a newer caravan today an Elddis Elusion 482 which goes fine with the 406 but we have also got a skoda fabia elegance 1.9tdi and this car is no good for the new caravan it's too light a car for towing the new caravan with. Is there any skoda which could tow, we are NOT going to buy a new car it must be second had car.

Hi Andrew.

You don't specify whether you prefer an estate or hatchback, petrol or diesel. If you're money will stretch, I'd go for an Octavia II 2.0TDi/2.0FSi or a Superb diesel.

It's worth having a look at Whattowcar.com for weights etc.

one in a scrap yard is the best skoda
"The old ones are the..."

Skoda Octavia is just an Audi A3 with a different body.

When Audi wanted quality build for the TT, they had it built in the former Czechoslovakia, where Skodas are built.

Now, if they built an estate version of the Skoda Superb and fitted the VW 4-Motion transmission to it - that would be a decent towcar.

Sorry to hear that Benny. I trust you're all ok now. What year and model Skoda was it? Over recent years they have changed tremendously, and as someone has already said, they are now badge-engineered VW and Audis, and as such are very good cars.

Benny, I`m really glad you and your family escaped O.K.

I can`t however accept the `bad brakes` bit.

There aren`t any cars out there (not built in the last 20 years anyway) with `bad brakes`. Badly maintained ones, yes. A simple MOT test would fail anything with less than adequate brakes.

I went to an accident a few years ago where an employee had crashed because his brakes on the company car `couldn`t stop it`. The lengthy skid marks where he`d locked up showed why he`d failed to stop.

The ability of modern cars far outweighs the ability of most drivers.

Even old Skodas like the original Octavia and Estelle didn't have bad brakes, unless they were poorly maintained - but that applies to any car.

I had a Skoda Octavia L & K 1.9tdi estate for a couple of years.

It was my company car and I put over 120,000 trouble free miles on it in less than 3 years.

Prior to that I had a VW Passat and the Skoda was equally as good on all counts except build quality. It was not as well put together as the VW but other than that you could not knock it.
