Another Solar Panel issue

Our daughter & s-i-l have had a flexible solar panel fitted to the roof of their T5 camper. The van has two leisure batteries, but has a compressor fridge, hence the need for a bit of a boost to the "off-grid" capability.
Trouble is, since the panel was fitted, the situation has got worse!
They used it locally over the weekend, and found the batteries were flat each evening - everything worked during the day (maybe straight from the panel?) but everything died when it went dark.
My first guess is that the van has stood for too long, and needs a good charge-up. The solar panel has been covered up while laid up, because it was parked under a particularly aggressive cherry tree, so we'll see what happens when it's been pumped up (either via alternator or mains).
But has anyone got any other ideas?

Is there a blocking diode in the circuit to stop the battery sending power backwards when the panel isn't charging it?
My other suggestion would be to get the battery tested.

Thanks Graham, I've passed that on.
I wouldn't know what one of those looks like (and their van lives here!) but they're getting in touch with the people who installed it tomorrow.
