Hi Folks

Currently have a Kia Sorento but a company car option is available so I am looking at tow car options.

We tow a Swift 540 van, max 1500kg does anyone out there tow with the lighter A4 or V50 and the larger A6 or V70?

I am weighing up tax implications as well but want the car to tow well.

Any owner feedback would be useful and let me know your engine size model etc.

Thanks

Fouldsy

Hi Fouldsy.

I used to have a Challenger 540 and towed with a A4 Avant(2006).

I have to say that I thought it was a superb tow car it was a very stable tow and would not hesitate in recommending as a tow car.

The only thing is that I towed with the 3.0tdi so the kerbweight was a lot more than the smaller engine models, the 540 is quite a heavy and I was over the 85% ratio so this would be worth checking beforehand.

I have just found technical data on line for the 2.0 170 and the kerbweight is only 1520 kg so I think you may have to look at the A6 size for your needs.

have to say that I found my A4 to be a superb car, I dont think you would be dissapointed with any Audi, never had a volvo though so can't comment.

I tow an Abbey 418GTS which is around 1500kg with a new type V70 d5 which is very, very stable and has plenty of grunt. You would more than cope with one. Before that I had an older (2005) V70 d5 which was just as good and more economical than the new one. I also towed a Bailey Senator Arizona (1473kg) with it with equal ease.

The V70 likes like a good option but the tax implications are high....your feedback is usefull.

I would recommened the A6 for the weight of your van and the tax.

The 170 engine is only 2% more than the 138 and you can even get the auto for only an extra 1%.

The Volvo is quite an expensive vehicle tax wise and the new 2lts has a very low towing limit compared to the D5.

Bear in mind that these limits will probabaly get worse as time moves on so unless the car is changed every 2 years be carefull before commiting to the Volvo as it will cost you about 6% more than the A6 at todays rates.

Hi ,

I tow with the new shape A4 2.0 tdI s-line , kerb 1500 kg - pull a Bailey Pageant MTPLM of 1365 KG. Tows fine but you know its there ...

I think 1500 KG is beyond the A4 despite the max tow limit of 1700 KG .

Realistically you would need the 3.0 TDI Quattro and the tax is way too high on this !

A6 is a better bet .

Thanks

Thanks to you all for your thoughts so far....the V70 D5 seems to be the recommended tow car but the tax will cost me dearly.

The A4 may not have the kerb weight A6 looking of interest so will investigate a bit more.

Any more opinions very welcome!

If you are looking at Volvos I think it will have to be the V70, I doubt the V50 is heavy enough.
Agree with Jennifer on this, if the V50 is any near as light as the previous V40 model then you will need the V70.

Greetings,

I tow a Swift Challenger 560 (MTPLM 1500Kgs) with an Audi A6 Avant.

The car has a 2.5 Tdi engine that has 163bhp. Its aCVT Automatic with a tiptronic facility and s/wheel paddles.

It pulls like a train and, under ideal towing conditions returns 28mpg. Just come back through Spain where they have enormous hills and it did'nt bat an eye. Best car by a long way that I have ever owned.
