Any clues as to the make of the awning? It may say on the canvas or on a label. If you can find that, then you may be able to Google instructions.
“Lots of poles” sounds like a full awning rather than a porch, but I could be wrong.
If you go on you tube and search for putting up an awning, there are lots of common features between poled awnings, and this may give you some clues.

Also contact a good solicitor, awnings are also known as "A divorce in a bag". Good luck.

I think it might be a Porch

If you lay it out can you find a label near ground level on the front or side - or a small label perhaps sewn in the roof/wall seam to identify the product?

If the thick fabric beading at the one edge of the awning ( known as Kador) is long enough to go through the awning rail opening at the lowest front corner of the van, all the way up the side of the van, across the roof, and down the other side to the back, then it is a full awning.
If the Kador is only long enough to go through the straight piece of awning rail across the roof, then it is a porch awning.
Can you spread it out and post a picture?
