i left the van battery connected over the winter period thinking it would be ok as it is not powering anything during the lay up.i periodically checked it over the 4 month period by the switch in the van to the van battery setting and the needle showed its usual charge.it became totally flat during a period between checks of about 4 days.i disconnected and charged the battery on trickle for about 36 hours and when connected to the van the voltage needle showed charge very slightly less than its normal level.over a four day easter break on hook up the van battery needle dropped to the red section on the last morning noticed as i was packing up.during the 50 minute drive home i was powering the fridge and set the switch to car battery and charge was regained to previous level when i got home 12 s plug used whilst driving.i am now wondering whether battrey is unable to hold charge whilst powering 12v equipment,or if van zig battery charger is faulty.

I feel your observation

"over a four day easter break on hook up the van battery needle dropped to the red section "

basically indicates that the Charger is Naff or not switched on.

With the charger connected whilst on hook-up it should not be in the red, and certainly not after even 24 hours.

Its time to do some checks.
