Hutch I left the Old Bear early Wednesday evening . Barely managed a pint and now recovering from a gastro bug . LFT all clear. Not sure of the origin although it may be the Bucks variety
Strangley enough , a friend called off a lunchtime pint with gastro bug. My cold is hanging on..

It seems matters are not as they appeared.
https://www.cnbc.com/2021/12/02/whe...nt-come-from-and-where-is-it-circulating.html
It is in Scotland , no trace to anything in SA. Same for,the rest of the U.K. Clearly C-19 mutations are not individual Country related? More so some Countries have better virologists more up to speed. I can’t wait for the Britannia variant😉
Yet HMG website states that the first two cases in U.K. had travel links to southern Africa, but didn’t specify the country. Given the virus would have been circulating before it’s official discovery it could be a possibility that the Scottish cluster were infected by “persons unknown” who perhaps unwittingly passed it on to someone who then started a chain The persons unknown may not have had symptoms or so slight they just thought they had a winter cold.

This one’s got further to run before a more definitive understanding emerges.

Why is it so important to try and pin the blame for any new variant on a particular country?

It's beginning to set person against person and to set up racial distrust. and after all no one has the definitive answer.

Not us Prof but HMG.
HMG are setting the travel bans based on origin of new strains. Why else ban travel to and from SA. This was never a witch hunt and certainly not racial distrust. For me this thread high lights the serious HMG failings going into panic mode, blaming everyone else except themselves. We have to accept every country that has suffered C-19 since inception WILL experience mutations. The next one may well start here.

Due to the travel ban some SA journalists are accusing Western countries of introducing Apartheid against South Africa. Others state that SA scientists may have been naïve in announcing the results of their top-notch surveillance of the Covid-19 virus and its constantly mutating strains, without thinking of the drastic punitive consequences from these Western countries. This is as per Prof Saths Cooper of the 70s group.
TBH I think countries want to protect themselves from new strains until they know more about the new strain and not because of where the variant originated, but we are now blamed for imposing travel bans!

There’s a big difference between apartheid and a travel ban to try and slow the spread of a virus until more is known about it. What I find incredible is that our Government did not impose the requirement fir a negative test before departing a country. To say new arrivals must have a self funded PCR within two days of arrival beggars belief given the statistics show a large percentage ignore the need to isolate until they get a negative result. Thank heavens we have the letter U in our alphabet.

The flip side is Australia. Their total border closure achieved nothing.

I guess you have a point but Australia having a death rate per million of 79 compared to Britains 2138 the travel ban must have helped as vaccination rates were very low compared to here. Although banning your own citizens from returning was somewhat harsh.

Remember the ASU’s population is far more widespread than U.K. For me the point is the mutations are happening every where.

That is a rash statement. What might have happened if they hadn't imposed the closure?

It seems that boarder closures are not as effective as hoped, BUT, what they do is to slow the spread and buy some time to make other arrangements.

Why are comments still appearing that try to link Covid based boarder closures to racialism or nationalism? Perhaps its time to close this thread.

If you read the NY Times and Australian press reports you will see the Jury is still out on the efficacy of the total closure. I don’t believe my comment was rash. Merely another view taking into account the data available. Spread almost becomes redundant if you accept C-19 will mutate. Prof if you don’t like this thread why keep reading it. It has progressed because of the current personal issues being suffered by Buckman’s family in SA.

The only person that has mentioned racism and nationalism is yourself?

I agree. It is simply reaction to a physical location. No suggestion of racism or nationalism IMHO. Remember, the SA scientists are being praised for their responsiveness to the situation. In retrospect it appears a travel ban may not have been as affective as hoped for, but that’s hindsight for you. I don’t think anyone thought it would be totally affective, but just might buy time.

The SA government recon their economy will be extremely hit by the travel restrictions. But there are priorities to consider.

I haven't seen any evidence of attempts to link Covid based border closures to racism or nationalism Prof, so there are no grounds so far for me to intervene.
Discussion of sanctions or restrictions imposed upon one nation by another isn't, as far as I can see , generated by the motives that you suggest, especially when one of those taking part in the discussion has direct links to one of the countries involved.

It is spreading very fast in South Africa as news carried a report that in one area alone in Gauteng over 6000 new cases had been reported in a 24 hour period. Those are the ones that they know about. However at this point it does seem that the death rate from the new variant is low.
I think we here in the UK need to be very careful and take extra precautions to prevent the same rate of infection.

Just a shame only 25% of their population is fully vaccinated. How lucky we are👍

It’s a real problem for their health authorities as they report no shortages of vaccines, but a reluctance of people to be vaccinated.

Unfortunately some back street SA journalists are placing the blame on the West for the Covid stating it is an evil plan to reduce the population hence the reluctance as many are still very superstitious and they still believe in witch doctors.
In Africa witch doctors are very powerful and most people in the West have no idea of the type of power they can hold over the local population.
All our relatives in SA have been vaccinated, but they have only been allowed one vaccination.
