Our car pass the M.O.T, but was told that the emissions is near it reading level, So I just been putting in Millers Diesel Power Sport 4, every time I get to half tank of fuel I then put in a shot of this stuff then fill up with diesel, only been doing this for a month or so, any other tip to bring the emissions down? Thanks Trevor

Hi trevor, what car are we talking about and what sort of mileage.

The emission cannot be that high otherwise they would fail the mot test, so that's good news.

The reason they are high, could be down to numerous things from air leaks in your intake system to Sticky/dirty Egr valves to clogged up exhaust system. The list is pretty long.

I certainly would not rely on millers, to bring down your emissions, depending on your car, I would have it checked out by a decent garage, as the problem could be pretty siple for them to diagnose... good luck

Hello Trevor,

I have had had a similar problem with my diesel Espace. The emissions failed the MOT test. My brother-in-law (who runs a garage that does MOT's) suggested driving the car for about 20 minutes before the retest and keep the engine revs up by using lower gears. This apparently 'blows' quite a lot of the particulates out.

On re-test emissions were well inside the limits!

It seems that diesels need to get up to working temperatures and to have the throttle exercised a bit to make sure particulates are properly blown through.

The use of diesel additives can help, but of course this puts the refiling bill up quite a bit.

The Millers is aimed at raising the cetane number which is similar to using BP Ultimate, hence giving beter mpg,but it's not likley to affect emmisions. It's also doubtful what benefit it gives to mpg as I have not seen any real test results.

Trevor,

is it anyworse than last years mot emmision test?As G correctly points out,a pass is a pass, and the potental problems could be many. The emmisions are 3% for a turbo diesel, and 2% for a non turbo diesel. The following is for a random car, picked from autodata cd- 406 td, homologation value 2.41%.

allowed value 3.00%.This shows from new the vehicle had 0.5% to play with.leaving the vehicle on idle before the test for any length of time will disrupt the reading,as will false oil temp readings.

Hi, Thank you all for your reply, in the past the garage that service our car do take it for a long run in low gear before taking it to the other local garage for a M.O.T, did wonder if they was pushing for time, and took the car straight there and the reading was high, will see what happen next year for the M.O.T Once again Thanks Trevor,
