Fifth Wheelers.

We just watched the TV programme million dollar motorhome. One from America showed a fifth wheeler, but not like the usual ones you normally see. The hitch looks like a standard 50mm one and it uses a safety chain. No breakaway cable. Clearly it needs a heavy duty tow car. But to me it just looks wrong. I wonder what sort of tow ball weight it requires.

I took this picture from the TV.

The programme referred to it as a fifth wheeler.

That's not a fifth-wheeler, just a conventional North American "travel trailer", aka caravan - weights are 2500-4000 kg and noseweights are typicall 10% so way more than we're used to - BUT - European SUVs sold in North America often have noseweight limits double ours.

Over there, safety chains and electric brakes are normal.

I would agree with you that it's not what is expected from a fifth wheeler. But the programme insisted it was.

PS, Just did a little research. Nothing on the Passport site OC linked to, mention fifth wheel. But I found this article which calls them a ‘flat with wheel’.

Here’s a deal. Buy a Honda Passport to tow your Passport caravan. The car retails in the US at £32000. So a complete new outfit at not much less than a campervan in UK. Can pensioners emigrate? 😂

My link at #2 wasn’t intended to contribute to a discussion on whether they are, or are not, called “fifth wheeler” as from the initial post it’s quite clear that it’s a towed trailer, rather than one fitted to a pickups load bay. But the link at #2 was to show the comprehensive specs of Passport trailer types and the eye wateringly low prices as measured by our prices. But even when I lived in Canada in the mid 1980s and visited the US a lot it was clear that our market for many commodities was expensive. Even bringing a UK spec car back “ duty free” was still more expensive than a Canadian would pay for an equivalent vehicle. But then in the mid 1980s the £ was slumping against the dollar, and most other currencies. Deja vu 🙁

There's a couple on the next pitch to us with a lovely fifth wheeler.
He's coming to the same music festival as we we are and there are no facilities that would cope with his black waste system.
He's booked another night back here after the festival so that he can empty his waste tanks.

I went to a 5th wheel centre near to Banbury a few years ago, I was most impressed by the quality of the whole outfit.

It's the first time that it's rained as we entered Twinwood, Hutch.
I got soaked packing down at Tithe Farm and setting up here. 🌧
Nice and dry inside the caravan now with coffee and a bacon sandwich on it's way

Hope it clears up soon. Today we went to the Worcestershire area. Yesterday the 4 cast was sunny and bright. Tell that to our cagoules.

I suspect the owners will be perfectly happy with its looks, after all they have bought it.
