Having just been back to the UK , +2000Mls round trip, have noticed a lot (about 30% ) of vans with these front covers, I assume they are to keep the front end clean, they seem to move about a lot when underway, wont this be rubbing on the gelcoat?, or is there another reason for them?

When we had ours specialised front cover they are taylor made they are a snug fit and it use to protect it from chips or stones that can fly up from the road as well keeping it clean

In over 18 year caravanning, all year round , never had any stone chips to the windows or the van, enough to worry about.

I have one and use it now and then. In autumn / winter conditions it keeps the mud and road dirt off the front.
It does in places cause some scuffs no matter how tight I fit it. It is a decent one.

Spring / summer don’t bother.
In fact going forward I won’t bother with it. Nothing wrong with a bucket , water and sponge , five minutes elbow grease. All clean 👏👏
