I asume it is the 2.5 diesel, if so consumption with diesels tend to improve with miles , once it has around 10,000 on the clock the engine should be loosened

Hi Sean,

I've had a Sorento xe manual from new in late 04 with 42,000 miles +, and solo get about 30-31mpg.Towing 1420Kgs it returns anything from 22 to 28mpg.

Like many others I was very disappointed when the car was new due to the utter rubbish printed in the Kia brochures claiming ridiculous fuel returns. If they had printed figures such as those above I would have been happy to buy the car anyway!

After 26,000 miles with no improvement, I gave up checking and have lived happily ever after. I suggest that you do likewise as there is nothing else to deter you from enjoying your purchase.

I have had two Sorentos, 1 manual & 1 auto. I have never got anywhere near 28mpg towing, 32 mpg on the manual solo, 24mpg towing, 28 mpg solo, 20 mpg on the auto. and I only tow a Swift challenger, not the heaviest of vans. these consumption figures are based on long runs through France and Spain, so the cars had a fair trial. The consumption is disappointing, but I would not swap the Sorento for anything else, it's a brilliant tug.

Sean

I have had my auto Sorento for nearly a year npow and towed around 4000 miles. On average I would say that I get between 19 and 22 mpg whilst towing depending on conditions. My van weighs in at 1325kgs so not large by any means. My previous car was a Nissan X-Trail and my average with that was between 23 and 26 mpg so not vastly different to the Sorento. The Sorento is a very confident tow car and I think most owners like this and are willing to put up ith what seems not so good towing economy. At the end of the day it is a big heavy car and I would agree that Kia do themselves no favours by quoting such unrealistic figures.

I have a Nissan Teranno 2 auto, that does about 20/22 mpg towing 1550/1600 kgs.

I was looking to buy a Sorrento hoping to get a better fuel return, so looking at the figures quoted I might not even get 20 mpg with my van.

We considered buying a Sorento a few years ago , lovely car for the money, but what put us of was difference in the figures published by Kia and the actual consumption attained by owners. Agreed the consumption is in line with similar vehicles of the size and weight , but where do Kia get their figures from? In the end we opted for 3.0V6 Grand Cherokee which returns 27 - 32 solo and 19 -22mpg towing a 1700kg twin axle.

Hi, I have an 04 2.5 (138bhp) auto and get around 22-24mpg towling a 1400kg van, and 30-32 in normal motoring but I don't drive in towns too much. It took until 20k miles to really loosen up and even now I put it into manual on a journey and take the revs up as the auto box does keep revs low.

sean,

I have had the 2.5sx on a 35 plate from new, it has done about 45,000mls, it dosen`t seem to matter how I drive it ,I get 27mpg solo, and 22mpg towing 1600kg LMC.not great I know but it is a great big comfortable tow car, I`ve never had a stiff back yet no matter how far I drive.enjoy your car mate.
