Continually making improvements to my Sprite Accord. Just changed the 3 center lights from "hungry halogens" to LED.

First tried a standard LED as shown below but it was too deep for cover and in fact light efficiency--- http://www.qis-uk.co.uk/Pics/Centre_light_old.JPG

So looked around and found a flat back pin LED that fits and works well.

The LED has open circuitry on the back and at first I was going to encapsulate it to render it water / moisture proof, especially for the bathroom but had a moment of brilliance and bought a PCB lacquer spray. All I did was spray both front and back and it is now moisture proof!

I bought a 12 LED flat disc G4 vertical pin to try out in one of the centre downlighters. It was warm white, but if I am honest I much prefer the colour and intensity of the old quartz halogen bulb I would say the same thing about the two spots that I changed as well. All three lamps came from a company recommended on this Forum. So guess it is a personal thing. I can see the advantages of LED if you spend much time off grid, but for me they don't light my fire, (or my caravan) but there again I did my apprenticeship at the lighting company that developed quartz halogen lamps which were a life saver on my motorbikes, but instant dismissal if caught with them.

Hi Other Clive -

I am not surprised you were not happy. LED bulbs come in various ratings, with general classifications including "warm light" and cool light" etc. To be more specific, this is better qualified by a "kelvin" rating. So "warm light" is typically around 2700K and "cool light" around 4000K. Next the bulb you were replacing was a halogen, typical kelvin rating of 4000K, little wonder you did not like it.

I am not sure what type of "centre" light you have, is it typical of the one in my pictures or is it a "spot" down light?
Whatever it is if you want the same "colour" look as the old halogen then the Kelvin rating must be 4000K Be careful some suppliers will call a bulb a cool light but it may hhave a kelvin rating of nearer 3000K which is not white / daylight enough.

The reason that i went for warm white (2700k) is that several posts recommended that colour rendition as being more "homely" and less sterile than the 4000K colour rendition. But I guess lighting is a personal thing and I don't like the warm white. The spotlight LEDs didn't cost the earth so I may change them out for 4000K colour rendition ones. The ceiling downlighter is one of three and they are diffused circular units not spots, so the halogen bulb will be replaced in that one and the LED just kept as a spare.
