I had a C220 CDI automatic from 2000 for 4 years and towed a 1500kg Hymer with no problems. You shouldnt have any problem with the bigger engine.

I had a 2004 C270Cdi estate with automatic + sports pack - towed 2007 Abbey GTS 418 very well (down to Austria a couple of times and Switzerland last year, including going over the Nufenen and St Gotthard mountain passes) . I replaced it last August with a 2007 C320CDi estate - even better, but the C270CDi was still an excellent tow car. Note the maximum tow limit is 1500kg.

Also, you'd be much better going for an April/May 2004 onwards C Class which had better interiors and suspension improvements.

I have had 2 ml270cd's 1 was and 02 plate and the other a 54 plate,the later being a special edition.

Both did approx 40k in 3 years and never had any problems at all.

The only time in the garage was to have a service at about 18k.

Towed a Coachman laser then a Elddis Storm, both twin axles and never missed a beat.

Very powerful engine with lots of torque still on par with some of today's 4x4's.Never struggled up hills with the van on the back.Towed up the big hills through no problem

The quality improved when they facelifted it in 2002,full service history is a must and mpg is around the 23 mark towing.

It is a bit wallowy by today's std's but its over 2 ton so doesnt handle like a hot hatch it is still a very capable car, very very good off road and will go up muddy slopes with ease.

Why did i sell first one got amazing offer on the special edition, second one was sold as i made the mistake of test driving the new shape.

Dont listen to the all the negatives you wont disapointed
