Mop and Bucket

I've no idea but remarked some time ago about a Devon site with instructions on how to use the mop and bucket of disinfected water whenever you enter the Shower blocks.

We always make every effort to walk into facilities and wipe our feet etc, but weilding a mop is not what I expect to do as a paying guest.

I've only stopped on a couple of CCC sites. On one of their sites which we have used for the past two years, there was a mop and bucket of water. On the rare occasions I used the site showers, I did clean the shower area before using it. That is because of the state it was left in by the previous user/s.

Regards

Lisa

Hi Cris, quite right nor would I expect to see a mop and bucket for use, as you say paying quest, it was rumours I heard that on or on some ccc sites that they were supplied for caravaneers and tenters to us.

Hi Lisa, I think that's terrible, you might expect to see a mop and bucket, dare I say on a "Haven" site. I think that would put me off the site for ever.

Hi Liz,

Yes it is true that in the shower blocks in Camping & caravanning club sites that there is a mop & bucket or two which is full of disinfectant or equivelent for the shower cubicles.

The theory is that you leave the shower that you have just used as you would like to find it so the next person doesn't have to shower in your left over talc/hair/shower gel/grass etc.

I know it probably sounds a bit weird to non C&CC members but it does actually work.

The wardens & cleaners change the solution frequently and I would say that 90% of people who use the facilities actually do clean the shower after they have used it. ( I think there are notices up explaining about it)

I have become so used to it I now find it strange that other sites don't do as well. After all we make the mess don't we and do you really want to shower in someone elses left overs?

I know in an ideal world the cleaners should be able to keep on top of it but in reality on a busy site it doesn't quite work out so why not clean as you go?

Hi Caroline & Simon, If Warden and cleaners change bucket frequently, so why don't they clean them for you, busy season we have somebody on site around shower block more or less all the time, you get to know when shower block is in constant use, after all you are on holiday why should you work, you pay good money should be all inclusive. I can see your point about cleaning up after yourselves, but if you have enough showers and cleaner is there or warden no need for mop and bucket. It gives the wrong impression. Liz

I always mop the C & CC shower after I have used it. Just the normal dust and dirt on the bottom of my shoes mixes with the water which inevitably lands in the "drying" area to leave mucky footprints. Once one or two use the mop then everyone starts to copy as they too want to enter clean showers - and realise that they should leave them in the condition that they wish to find them.

Hi Mike P, I can see your point but would you not rather see a cleaner or warden their, rather than a mop and bucket, as I said earlier you pay pitch fees which includes clean showers, plenty of showers available and staff you cannot go wrong. Liz

Have to say I ALWAYS leave my sandals outside the shower cubicle. That helps to keep the floor clean for starters.

I wish though that some places would think when they design their shower cubicles.

The worst I have found are at the Lee Valley Camp Site . A nice Site is spoilt by the Shower Block at the top . There the showers were 'done up' last year - very nicely too apart from ........

THE DOORS OPEN INWARDS !!

Meaning that you have got dry and then have to step back into the shower area so you can open the door !!

Why not wear a pair of cheap flip flops in the shower - carry them to the shower and put them on prior to use of the shower? This way the shower should stay clean and also there will be no risk of catching any foot disorders. On leaving the shower carry them back to the van, wearing your day shoes.

Good point, but all doors open inwards, if opened outwards you are likely to bash someone in the face, obviously they must of had small showers. Liz

On that point do you remember on going to the swimming pool and have to enter a pool of distinfectant, maybe they should bring that back for shower blocks?

Same applies at cc sites and I do not find it a problem, as it only takes a few seconds to do, and leaves it nice and clean for the next person, with the best will in the world you cant expect the cleaners to be standing there 24/7 waiting to clean up after every individual, and once again it all comes down to common courtesy & respect, or am I still living in a bygone age.

Personally I'm very appreciative of the mop and bucket at CC sites - I can leave the cubicle clean, as I leave my bathroom clean at home, and if the previous user has not left it so (rare) I have the means to clean the floor before I use it. It makes perfect sense to me - and using the mop takes about 30 seconds.

The idea that a cleaner should be waiting outside for you to come out so he/she can clean up after you is fatuous.

No your still in the 2lst century but after all thats what wardens and cleaners are their for to look after the guests on sites, if it means 24/7 so be it, we all have a job to do and thats one of them. Liz

I don't know what others do, but I don't enter a shower area stugged in mud and have never needed anything more than the shower itself to rinse out the cubicle when I'm finishing my wash. Continental sites are often cleaned numerous times each day and I see no reason for that not to be the case with UK sites especially with what they charge.

Chris I quite agree you are paying so why should you clean, I must say though their are lot of gentleman and ladies on this topic, I am most surprised that a lot of you would prefer to see a mop and bucket in the shower area.

Another big problem with communal shower blocks is when the weather turns inclement, many is the time I have gone to use one only to find large amounts of grass (especially if it has just been cut) and mud, through no ones fault in the shower cubicle, and again if there is a mop and bucket to hand it takes but a few seconds to clean. I take pride in my possessions/personal belongings so why not in some one else's? Especially when they have gone the extra mile to make things really nice for there guests. Just consider it the same as a toilet brush! Or is it a case of some people find it below them to clean up after themselves, as with some dog owners.

When visiting a hotel I don't expect to mess up the facilities and nor do I clean them up, I leave them as presentable as I find can and for the cleaners to do their job.

We went to been to CC site and others with grates outside, rubber mat inside door way and then the industrial type absorbent mats inside and even on a rainy day the floors are immaculate.

With tiled floors and mops and buckets I'm not taking the blame for someone sliding and going a+++ over ++++ on the floor I've just cleaned either.

That's why in this PC country facilities are closed for cleaning so that floors dry or warning signs are deployed in supermarkets and fast food outlets when someone has to mop and squeegy the floor!

Using CC sites I`m used to seeing (and using) a mop and bucket.

It takes seconds and leaves the area in a state in which you would hope to find it.

In response to the `I`ve paid my site fees......` crew, do you also consider it to be someone elses job to flush the loo after you`ve been?

It seems to be the way caravanning is going. Lovely sites and facilities spoilt by the people who use them.

Hi Liz,

I think Berty has said it all really, unfortunately there are people who do behave in a loutish way and leave the showers in a mess hence the mop and bucket, anyway it doesn't hurt anyone just swoosh the mop around and you'll find that the warden/cleaners clean the toilets/showers at least three times a day. They do have other jobs to do.Jim

Spot-on. Couldn't agree more.

Good point raised cris on slippery floors, we have the appropriate signs to use, are guests also to mop floors and put signs out, as you said previously the clean water washes the shower out, so its only the actual floor space where you take your shoes off, but their again most people wipe their feet on the door mat before entering the showers.

We find here that showers are used constantly from early morning until about lunch time, then same again evening time, so really it's not too much for cleaners to be on duty to make sure showers are clean for paying guests to use...

Hi Liz

I think it's a nice touch - sites leaving a mop and bucket for use. No matter how many times a day the showers are cleaned, there's always someone willing to leave the area in a total mess.

A sight that comes to mind is when I walked into the shower area last year and it looked like someone had clipped a shaggy dog in there and just left the shower area in a total mess.

Grass is another problem too. I can't see why people have issues with seeing or using a mop and bucket. Manners (cleaning up after yourself) cost nothing.

Lisa
