Hi all , complete newbee so pleaes be gentle with me.

Looking at setting up for the 2009 season and i am after any info and advice you care to offer.

Looking ideally at a 4 berth used caravan and currently have a VW Golf 2.0 GT TDI 140bhp (mkV). Would this car be suitable to pull any 4 berth caravan or would i need to change the car? or downscale to a 2 berth van?

Thanks in advance

Jim

Hi Jim

As a start try what tow car.com. I think your car is c1380kg kerb weight. In theory as a new comer you would be looking at a Van with a MTPLM (maximum technical permissable laden mass) or van plus belongings at 85% of this c 1175kg. Then try Practical Caravan mags for looking for the correct layout and weights to suit. However I owuld also check car for max towing capacity as these can sometimes conflict however this is less likely with a diesel. It really depends on what you want out of your van as to whether you need to change the car.

Jim - we are only in our second year caravanners and bought a 4 berth Adria Altea. Only 1100kg but a solid little unit, we would recommend the Adrias as thay are quite light. Good Luck

Have a look at Bailey Ranger 460/4 MTPLM is 1184kg.

your car 1380kg. so 1184kg div 1380kg x 100 = 85% nice weight.

The Bailey is very nice as a good size two birth or four.( fixed bed).

Have fun Steve.

i agree with steven ,JIM had a Bailey ranger 460/4 good enough van nice and light good all round van and good prices to be had .only thing i would watchout 4 is any van can have damp in them so take a good damp meter with you when looking at 2ndhand

also haggle for something off price as you don,t have traidin to swap or ask 4 aquaroll and wastemaster included in sale plus anyother things if they want the sale they should give you something off .Just turnround and say i will go somewhere else then they will soon give you what you want ???its worth a try anyway good luck

cheers
