i like the look of these,always lusted after one when i was younger,are they reliable?they have chain drive belt ,is that a better thing??what mpg could i get??thanks,adrian

pajero 2.8,any good????

Adrian had mine for 9 years in all that time the only thing that went wrong was a cracked fuel pipe, oh and had to change 3 tail light bulbs.
Mine is the 2.8 Turbo intercooler SWB 1998 on S plate, done 106,000 mile's.
Thinking of changing for a newer model a 2007 at the end of the year only problem Mr Brown and is road tax may go for the outlander but know doubt when it come's to it probably jump for goog old Shogy.

Ps had the 1988 model changed it for Maverick "Big Misstake"

I have a Pajero 2.5td auto swb and it tows my t/a Abbey Vogue with no bother. I'd go for the 2.8 if I was buying another one simply because of the chain camshaft drive belt.
Pajero's are reliable but can be very thirsty, around 20mpg towing and 24mpg solo around towns. This improves to around 28mpg solo on a steady motorway run.
Some insurance companies try to load the premiums and state that parts are difficult to come by because Paj's are imported but that is bunkum. There are specialist insurers such as 2gether in Ely who charge normal premiums.
The cars are very reliable and at the moment it's a buyers market so look for a Paj with cruise control, heated leather seats etc and there are plenty to choose from.

What is it with Insurers and those "who don't know" about Grey imports.
The UK is the only country in the world where the Pajero is called Shogun.
The UK is the only country where the Mazda MX-5 is not called a Eunos Roadster.
We have a Eunos and the spec is so much higher than the MX-5.
In truth, IMO, the UK ones are downgraded versions of the rest of the world!!

I am a confirmed Paj/Shoggy fan and reiterate Parksys comments and also Dustydog as far as the higher spec of grey import goes.
However there is a slight dowside to the imported 2.8 Pajero in that it eats seals on it's diesel pump and will suffer from overheating if the cooling system has been neglected.
The owners club forum is full of instances of the above problems but also importantly how to deal with them.
If you go the Shogun route to ownership there is more chance of getting service history with the car and the consequent risk of breakdown is reduced. The home model 2.8 does not seem to suffer the dreaded pump failure either so may be it's differing derv spec in UK that the Japanese home market cars don't like.
Year for year you will also find more underbody corosion on the UK cars but It is rare for it to be terminalas they are so over engineered.
The Paj is usually more expensive than it's UK cousin for a specific model and year - probably because of higher spec but I think that generally they are in better condition.
