Google AI suggests they aren't specifically illegal but only appropriate as a temporary repair, as in your grand-daughter's case.My granddaughter had to return from a construction site in west wales and found she had got a puncture. The site was in the back of beyond and her recovery said it would be some hours before they could attend. By which time the site would have been closed and it would be dusk. . So one of the workers offered to try a temporary repair with a similar kit, as her goo kit would not have worked vin its own.
After repairing it it held pressure so she set off for home, keeping to the inside lane on motorways, where there was an inside lane. Next day she got a new tyre.
I had a temporary repair kit when I was off roading, but I was always under the impression that they were illegal for on road use.
Ditto. Problem now is which type to buy?Seems to me the main difference is they are not a vulcanised repair. But as a get you out of a fix I'm buying one for emergency use🤪
The Strings and the Mushrooms, are both inserted with a glue, much like Puncture repairs or old on inner tubes, I would say Mushrooms are better.Seems to me the main difference is they are not a vulcanised repair. But as a get you out of a fix I'm buying one for emergency use🤪
Like when I was cycling I had to make sure my glue was in date for puncture repairs, as were the repair patches too . If I had to open a tube it was replaced shortly afterwards. The Strings and the Mushrooms, are both inserted with a glue, much like Puncture repairs or old on inner tubes, I would say Mushrooms are better.

Eurocarpart sell some types. When you are in the Highlands , miles from anywhere I see these kits as a life saver, car or caravan. Seems to me they will work. The air pressure alone helping hold the mushroom in place.
I will order a UK set for emergency use only. Now to find a UK seller 😉

No, the mushrooms are pushed in from the outside. The advantage of tyre strings is they can be fitted with removing the tyre from the wheel - while the mushrooms need to be fittedfrom inside.
See the video Hutch posted . Very clever these engineers from overseas😉The advantage of tyre strings is they can be fitted with removing the tyre from the wheel - while the mushrooms need to be fittedfrom inside.
